Just as the schools were to open in September, the brick casing o! the boiler at West Kent School suddenly caved in, which required a very considerable expenditure for rcpairs. In addition it be- icamc necessary to supply the fc- male teachers of that. school with a rest room and proper toilet facilities. Some additional expens- es were also necessary for changes in class rooms on account of class rooms being opened for special pupils. Early in the mflffllng of the 21st of October. an unfortunate tire took place in the boiler room of \V6$t Kent School, due to heat- ing of the coal. This caused an irdziitional expenditure of ncurly $1500.00 up to the close of the year. On. account. of the fire it was necessary to close the school, and the pupils attended Prince Street School from one to five o'clock in the afternoons until we were able to rc-open West Kent school on November 3rd. The interior of all four schools are now in very good condition. Manual {training During the year Manual Train- ing has been successfully carried on at West Kent School under the direction u! Mr. Loliaron E ‘Tait, who gave instruction to n total of 231 boys from that school- adn Prince street School. similar satisfactory instruction was given m Queen Square School by Mr. Percy Barlow to 248 boys of that school. The boys attending these classes are receiving great benefit. During the months of-Alpril and May. October and November in- struction in Domestic Science was carried on in the kitchen ofPrince of Wales College by Miss Jessie Fullerton for '11 girls of grades ‘I and 8 of Prince Street School, and Miss Bessie Prowse for 60 girls of Grades '1, a sad 9 of wast Kent School. At Rochdord Square School 60 girls were given similar in- struction in April and May by a member of the teaching staff, and during October and November a- bmst"l0 girls received this instruc- tion. This is abrancl-i of educat- ion in which the girls are greatly interested. and which will be use- ful to them in later years. For some years there has been a growing demand for special in- struction of some pupils. During the auznmer four teachers were appointed and sent to a suamer school in Toronto. where courses were taken in this branch of cduy cation, and commencing in Sup-V tember this work has been carried on with good success in each of the four schools. During the year instruction in music in the four schools has progressed. Seven and one» half hours instruction is given in all four schools each week.
