Perhaps the dinner will attract even more attention than the dancing as they are scheduled to have steak smothered in mush- rooms and that is a meal to make mouths water. The planned party takes on add- ed signlficance because it will be the last social event held under the old slate of officers. Naturally they wish to make it a good one. First or Postwar German Immigrants To Arrive In PEI Some months ago the state of war with Germany was officially declavrdd by Canada as ended. and as a result German immigrants are once more being admitted to the country. Last nigm. a Ger- man farm laborer arrived in the city. and left immediately for Stanley Bridge where he will be employed on the farm of Mr. Her- bert McEwen. The young emigrant has had twelve years in school. and speaks English in addition to his own language. He has been working on his father's farm. and was also assistant manager of aiarge estate for a while with twenty-five farm hands under his charge. He comes to the Province highly recom- mended by the Canadian emigra- tion officisls. who screen all Eu- ropean applicants before they are approved for entry into this country. This screening takes into account the applicant's medical. political. and occupational fitness for citizenship in Canada. it is understood that now the then has been lifted on German immigration, a considerable num- ber of farm labourers. tradesmen. and very efficient domestics will be given" entry to Canada. Ger- man domestics in particular have a fine reputotion throughout Eu- rope for thoroughness and reli- ability. Approximately loo men have registered the National Im- ployment O lea in Charlottetown for work on the new American sir-base at ,Gooso Bay. Lobrador. Forty of these are labourers. thir- iy-five are carpenters. and the rest are made up of electricians. bulldozer operators. welders. ma- chanlcs. cooks. painters. and other trodeunen. An official of "the contracting company will arrive in marlin!- town on Monday to iniiorvinv the qualified tradesmen. who have filed applications. No labourers will be requiud for some woohs E Premier Had To Pass Up Tempting Offer 0f Voies The votes of an entire commun- ity were "lost" to Premier J. Walter Jones and the Liberal party in the April 36 Provincial general election because of a slight accident of geography. During the election campaign. Premier Jones received a letter signed by a man and his wife which promised the Liberal party change for a modest road build- ing project. The letter containing the request was prompted by a message from Premier Jones ap- pearing In a. national farm week- 'Iiho letter read in part as fol- lows: "Could you help us toymake a little road in our town? it is about one mile and a half from the highway and there is s brook about 00 feet wide to cross. The roads arepin very poor condition ...not fit for a car or a truck and not very good for a horse and cart. We have to wait for the tide to fall to get across. If you can help with the road we will be satisfied to pass the road through our field away from the sea shore. "There are eight families where the road does not reach. it will not cost very much to unsvke s road;-aibout 31,000. If you can give me a little help l will make the road. A little is always a help. The eight families will all be very pleased to let the road pass through their fields. I will buy the screen from the manager. We are willing to vote Liberal on Thursday, April N.” ' The only catch was that the writer was is resident of New- foundland and the road he wanted connected two small settlements on the southwest corner of New- foundland about 15 miles from the American airport at Stephen- v e. Premier Jones has passed the request along to Premier Joseph smallwood of Newfoundland.
