That first stranger had start- ed on quite as if nothing had hap- pened. but that dreadful smell still remained. It must be that he was an enemy to be watched out for. How could any body with a scent like that not be? He hurried back to join his sister in the thicket and tell her what he had seen. It was 'the next thing to a certainty that North should make three notrump with the help of South's five spade tricks-such a suit can be presumed to be solid- but it was no: so sure that south could avoid the loss of four tricks at spades. If South's idea was to score his honors, he should change his attitude. It is true that the four-spade contract was maiuible, but as ad- ditional proof that three notrump would have been better-south didn't make four spades. West led the ace and six of hearts. East won the second trick with the heart nine. cashed the king and led the heart queen. south ruffed and drew four rounds of trumps. On the last trump a discard had to be made from dummy.. Un- fortunately, however. this plan did not work-East turned up with a club stopper. South's choice of discards from dummy was bad.
