The great stone memorial, with its massive pylons and the figure of a woman brooding over her two dead sons, was dedicated in 193 by Kind Edward VIII at a ceremony attended by 8,000 Can. dian veterans. It dominates the topmost line of the ridge that was the scene of the Canadian oorps' great victory in 1917 and honors the 60,000 Canadians out down by the First World War'a sickle of death. With the unveiling. international fame came to Mr. Ailward and at his death he was known as Can- ada's most distinguished sculptor. INSPIRED BY DREAM A dream was Mr. Allward's in- spiration for the Vimy memorial, a dream in which the dead rose in masses and entered the fight to save the living. "So vivid was this impression that when I awoke it stayed with me for months," he recalled. He found it in a mined palace of the Emperor Diocletian in the an- cient city of Spalato, Yugoslavia. His words during the building were recalled when the Germans swept through France in 1940. "We carved the figures of stone instead of casting them in bronze." he said. "Bronze figures might be melted down for munitions if war came again." The memorial sur- vived the Second World War un- damaged. At the start Mr. Allward ax- pected the job to take five years. It took 14. The memorial cost 81.000000. Mr. Allward was born in To- ronto in 1876. the son of John A. and Emma Allward. both of St. John's. Nfld. He left school at 14 to start work as a carpenter with his father. COPIED MICHELANGELO .. He became apprenticed to a firm of architects. but instead of sticking to blueprints, copied drawings of Michelangelo and of Greek sculpture. A Toronto committee in charge of erecting a monument to the men who fought in the North West Rebellion invited Allward to pre- pare a symbolic figure of peace to crown the War memorial. His work won acclain and he soon received other comissions. After studying in London and Paris. improved technique was ap- parent in his first important work -the towering South African Mon- ument in Toronto.
