At the Police Court in this City yesterday the case against Frank Mahar charged with breaking and entering C‘ameron's Hardware store on the night of the eighth instant came up for final hearing. An old man named McPhail from the coun- try, who had been remanded to jail eight days ago, he having applied to the Police Station for assistance claiming that he was sick and had no means of support, was again reman- ded for eight days. The mem-bers of Excelsior Insti- tute, York, held their annual ban- quet on Wednesday evening last which was largely attended and a decided success in every particular. The President, Lemuel Crocket, occupied the chair and in a happy manner welcomed those present and thus op-' ened a pleasing, program. Lieut Governor McKinnon, made two ap- propriate speeches and emphasized and urged the young people to make homes for themselves in this Provin- ce which is such a splendid agricul- tural land. Prof Ross’ address was teeming with wit and was greatly appreciated while his spicy reading brought down .the house. Other speakers, whose remarks were listen, ed to with enjoyment , were Rev Mr Hawley, Rev. E. Bell, ‘Dr. McDonald, Wm. Gibbson, Peter Brodie, and J. Court. Songs of merit were given by George Beairsto and Herbert Dennis. The ladies contributed several splen- did choruses. The cup won at the Amherst Winter Fair by Peter Brodie, was on exhibition on the Chalrman's desk and as this is the third year for Excelsior In- stitute -members to carry off lhis trophy they are justly proud and de- serve hearty congratulations. At the front of the hall was also a fine line of prize ribbons which had on different occasions been proudly won and it is understood that for excel- lence Excelsior is the banner Insti- tute of this Province. After the program the banquet was served .by the ladies and far surpassed all pre- vious efforts. The guests, who num- bered over one hundred and fifty, enjoyed to the limit the charming menu prepared and the votes of thanks tendered to His Honor the Lieutenant Governor, and all who took part were heartily supported by all present. The remainder of the evening was passed in social chat and an impromptu program, every- body expressing their pleasure at being present and hoping for many such meetings in future years. _________,.__- ::Horace Haszard oders for sale one half interest in a section 640 e0r¢S 0! wheat growing land in the Province of Saskatchewan together with hor- ses, farm implements, seed grain, etc. For further particulars apply to Horace I-Iaszard, Charlottetown. 2-1Bd1w._ STEWARTS Bread ~ .is the highest standard for quality Try it Prices 5c, 6C, 7° Ind 3¢ per loaf.
