EXPANDING THE MAUSER BULLETS. Sir William Stokes, writing on the subject of the Mauser bullet and the wounds produced by it, points out that, notwithstanding all that was said in the earlier stages of the war as to the Mauser being a merciful and hum- ane weapon, later experience has gone to show that the injuries pro- duced by it have been of a much more serious character than those at first described. He specially sefers to certain remabks made by Sir William MacCormac, Mr. Treves, Mr Dent and others, who advocate the desira- bility of ‘masterly inactivity, in this say that his experience in the Maritz- burg military hospitals and in the hold opinions which differ the views mentioned. He believes that the gunshot wounds met with in the earlier part of the campaign differed materially in char- acter from those observed of late, and increasing gravity of the wounds has been the cause of the in- creased difficulty which has arisen in him to This change he attributes to two causes. First, the frequent conversion by the Boers of the Mauser bullet into an expanding one, either by re- moving a small portion of the case ! | i i } ; ‘clearly established that the closer the Matricu..\jovn Examinations, preliminary! Secondly, of the wounds observed of late has been that the ranges have been closer than they were formerly, it being range the more serious is the injury likely to be. In illustration of his con- clusions, he gives details of a_ series Hugh Millar here interposed by to a strange laugh in school? ‘That is vost. ‘Why doyouask? But now that I remember, he had at times a very ex- traorainary laugh that made us all stare. It had a train of queer chuck- ling which exploded in a succession of loud and deep guffaws that shook his whole body and displayed all his teeth hike the keys ofa piano. He then clapped his hands on the book he held against his knees; yet none ot us ever knew at what he was laughing, He hada grim smile in reproving pupils, and a habit of tapping tkeir heads with knuckles as he told them their heads would never be worth the price of hugh or the charge of a_ barber, thoats, mammas and aunts had that morning combed, kissed and biessed them—as if they were teaming with the sublimest inventions and designs?’ a The provost saw that Hugh Miller and some other guests were listening eagerly; and he froceeded: ‘One morning, a few minutes before the school hour, when most of the pupils had arrived, and—as rain was falling— they had gone into the school,a _ don- tether on a grassy spot near, was en- tering the playground. Bill Hood and I were so far on our way, and Bill, who was a stout and frolicsome land—the ring-leader in many sports and tricks —rushed to mount the animal, and he. gan to guide and force it into the With desperate spurring the donkey was induced to carry its rider over the threshold;—and what a recep- tion both of them got from the juvenile crowd! Bags and books were at once fastened te the tailand around the neck of the ass, and so busy were Bill and half a dozen companions in urging the animal to canter around the school, and to ascend the short stair of the master’s desk, that they did not notice the time speeding; and before! they could remove the stranger, Mr. Carlyle appeared. We expected a tre- mendous explosion of wrath; but he| burst into a roar of laughter—such a/| us to join in it, produced a sudden and complete hush, and that roar was renewed again and again when the ass, withdrawing its forefeet from ~ first step of the desk stair and turning round, took a pace or two! slowly toward the master, as if to salute him. ‘“That, "exclaimed Carlyle, “is the wisest and best scholar Kirkcaldy has yet sent me. He is fit to be your teacher. He tapped the donkey’s head as he was wont te do ours, and said: “Theres something here, far more than in the skulls of any. of his brethren before me, though | these sculls are patted in fond! admiration by papas and mammas, and though that far grander head- piece meets only with merciless blows.” ' Also roar, however, as, instead of tempting! _ EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN JULY 27, 1900 a tan ee He then gave some hard taps on | Bill Hood‘s head, and would not allow him to dismouat, but, for a penalty, ordered him to ride up and down the school for an hour, whilst those | boys whohad been most active in | helping Bill to go through the farce had to march in pairs before and behind the perplexed looking ass, He did not require the other scholars to attend to their several school lessons, but silently permitted them to stand as spectators ofthe grotesque procession, Then he himseif, seated within his pulpit-like desk, surveyed Bill and his company. The difference is that Dr, Chage’s Kidney-Liver Pills were per- fected after the formula had proven it- self of inestimable value in seores of hundreds of cases. Dr. Chase won almost as much popu- larity from his ability to cure kidney disease, Ifver complaint, and backache, with this formula, as he did from the publication of his great recipe book.
