Why wait to buy gabnrdines. blue. ADAM t Inilneeu-ed for lg (By James Henderson got some supplies and proceeded to the mouth of what is now called Indian River. which he traversed toward its source as far as what is now call- ed Quartz Creek. He went up the creek and over the divide into the Klondike system of creeks and rivers. He had prospected at several places en route, but found nothing thereby proving the old prospect- ing adiige "gold is where you find it." Sometimes people miss the pay streak" by only a few inches. Quartz Creek was A good produc- CI. Over the divide, lienderson camped on a small creek which ran into Idumber Creek, which ran into the Klondike River. It was later named All Gold or Pure Gold. He struck what he thought was a fairly good prospect. This discovery took place in the fall of 1895. The usual date given for the great discovery is the year 1391. That is the year in which the first shipment of gold was sent down the Yukon and then by steamer to Seattle. Very little, if any, news of the great "strike" had gotten to the outsider. The news of the million dollar shipment electrified the world. The striking of claims took place in the summer of 1896 and the winter of 189'! they began to take out gravel "dumps", which had to wait till the water ran in the spring of 1891 for the "clean- up." Water is a necessary concom- itant of placer mining. The gold bearing gravel is dump- ed or shoveiled into a sluice box through which a fast stream of water called a "sluice-head" is dir- ected. The gravel and dress is car- ried out of the sluice box and is called tallings. The gold on account of the gravity will sink into "rip- ples" at the bottom.
