Farm and Garden Notes. Ferpinc Newty Catvep Cows.— It is nota good plan to feed too largely | | | a day ortwo before calvi ng. This would have a tendene y to give her the! scours and weken her. What is wanted is &trength and a vigorous tone | to the whole system. Moderate feed- iay for a time beforehand with extra food, being kept from exposure and excitement, will prepare a cow to ber ber calf without sickness orloss, After- | ‘ | ward the same fvod acd treatment) should fellow, increasing the same} extra feeding after a tewdays to pro- vide forthe drain upon her to make milk. No cold water should be given to herdor several days, and it would) be well to emit the reots fur the same) lesgth of time, lest they might cause a} ehill. Ifa eow has been used to eating | oilmeal it will be proper to inc tease the | amount to twe quarts before calving. I do not think it is any advantage to | mix meal or bran with water in the, form.of ‘‘slep,” but it would be a bene it to miX some coarse material with it to insure better tication and digestion. | This is one of the advaotages of roots. Hay eut into chaff or fine bitgis the! next best substitute to mix with meal. This practice 13 almost unkeaown in ani- mal feeding iu J ~~ rs if it should be more generally adopted it would re- sult in saving large cudbiition of meal now fed alone, and swallowed | without the benetit of mastication and | mixing with the saliva, and carried | directly to the third or feu th stomach, | when only a portion is digested and ab-| sorbed, the remainder passed on and! voided without any beaetic other then! fillfffi: the stomachs and bowels —F. D.| Curtis, in Country Gentleman. Pe ree Ewes anp Lamps aT Tus SEASon. —ireat caution should be takea not to} allow ewes to run in the fields till the lambs become strong and able to follow} easily. The ewes themselves are the | bétter for being kept in yard or shed | till they recover full strength after yeaning. Thelambs should be under the eye of the attendant for several | weeks, in comfortable quarters, where theif wants can be attended to in case their dams did not yield sufficient oe for them. As much care should takea to feed the ewes to produce a} liberal supply of milk for the lambs, as | to feed dairy cows ty produee a profit- able .quantity of milk. Aewe often sucks two lambs, and a thirfty lamb will sometimes gain three pounds per week. In this case the ewe must furnish the food for six pousds growth of Jambs per week. What a great draft this must be upon her, besides supporting | her own wants! She cannot do this | without the necessary food. She must! eat to support three lives at once, Hay | alone wll not enable her to do this, any | more than hay alone will frunish food for a dairy cow to producea large quantity of milk. The ewe should be} fel, where easily obtained, one-half | pound of linsee l-oil mteal, and one pound | of Corn. or corn meal, with good hay. This would keep the stomach in healthy | condition, and cause a large yield «© if milk. Plenty of pure water should be | Within reach ef ewes. They ariok | » much more than fattening sheep. | - Where oil meal is not easily obtained, | one quart of eats er one pint of corn | will do. Ifthe ewes are fed in this maoner till grass gives them full support, the lambs will grow so finely | as to delight the flock-master, and he will never regret the expenditure for food. The lambs should be taught | early to eat foed for themselves. It i is | easy to teach them to drink cows milk | —that is,sweet skim milk—and w here | cows are kept, this is a profitable dis- | position of a portion of the skim-— | milk. It will probably pay as much! it fed to lambs that are to be sold early | a%toany other animals. This period | . between hay and grass is a most| importent one to be studied by the | sheep owner, and he will come to the} conclusion that h: iyand grain should | come up to grass, aod there should be | no period between them. —- National| Live-Stock Journal, Chicago. | _—_—- «+ Suicia’ Notices. ———- THosE wishing to take lessons in English | subjects, Mathematics or Classics can do Ro | by applying to J.
