The awarding of the contracts lor the ear ferry t.ei~ minals at Traverse and Tormentine is another long step forward in what I generally regarded as the biggest un- dertaking .by any government on be- half of this province. Step by step this great project has been advanced quietly, unostentati- _ ously and noiselessly-undisturbed; even by the uneasy inurmuringe of the prophets who foretold its early aban- donment. 'l‘rue to its promise to the people. the government instituted s careful survey of the possible, routes for the ferry, made its selection, pre- pared plans and specifications for steamer and terminals, awarded the contract for the steamer at a cost of over $600,000, and now, that for ter- minals has been awarded at a cost of despatches from Ottawa this morn- 000. 7 ay an expenditure »of~sear,lp -‘8s,000,-I One more step_’/ re- mains, _that of standard- iaing the Prince Edward Isla-nd~Bai\~ wey. Things are being done and the people of this province are awakening to thelact that their_ ln- terests are being forwarded as rapid- ly as the development and growth of this young and lusty nation will warrant. They are awakening also to the fact that the door leading to a new and brighter era for the pro- vince is being opened and that very soon the isolation which has hither- to been s handicap will have become over $1,370,000, appropriating alrea-. a thing of the Past. June will be a red letter month in the annals of Prcsbyterianism _ in Canada; for the first time in its his- tory tbere is going to be a monster rally of clergy and laymen, the ren- dezvous being Toronto. The annual General Assembly of the Church opens in that city on June 5th and ar- rangements have been made for a great convention to precede it, com- mencing on June lst. The moving spirit is the Rev. Dr. A. S. Grant, of Toronto, und the objects are two- fold: to give s. change of scene to ministers and missionary workers; and to bring them together to dis- cuss ways and means of carrying out a number of objects oi vital import- ance to Canada which the Presbyter- ian Church has at heart. Every min- ister and missionary from the Atlan- tic to the Pacitic who can possibly be spared will be present, together with at least one responsible layman from each congregation. No less a sum than $100,000 has been subscribed for the convention; and all the expenses W`"W"""""i"§§s§§m" .ini cesvnmon. the purpose of defraying thelcost ol- be defrayed from this fund. The min- isters, their wives and lay delegates will be billeted in Toronto, every Presbyterian Church there having a reception committee for this end; and all the arrangements are as complete as it is possible to make them. . Among the subjects to be discussed is the question of the assimilation of the vast influx of foreign immigra- tion and the education of the child- ren of these immigrants in the Eng- lish tongue. Most pf the speakers will he Canadians, but there will be one or two outstanding figures from over the border, who are authorities on social problems. The convention will last for four days, but all those in attendance will be invited to re- main another week or so for the de- liberations of the General Assembly. The project has been received with en- thusiasm in most parts of Canada, and a great impetus to the work ol the Church is expected to result. Mr. Myers, in mlkhlk this motion, explained that in many dis- tricts it has been customary to omit the poll-tax in order that the burden of taxation might fall upon the pro- perty, simply in order that the pro- perty of absent owners might be tax- ed.
