Mr. Mills is best known | for his long speeches and his philosophy. | He is also to be credited with no small! ability, considerable independence of mind, and purpose todo that which is right.| He will be an addition to the strength of | the better elea ent inthe government. St. John Sun: Io spite of the neglect and blunders of the Goveroment in making the winter port contracts, itis likely that a large business will be done at this port during the coming wiuter. Some of the lines which have arranged to give a direct service expect to provide extra sailings, and itis thought that other steamship lines that have no subsidies wil! patronize this port. This is an evidence that a mag- nificent direct service might have been ob- tained for half the mail steamship subsidy. The Beaver line ships were all right for the experimental service, or for the emal e: subsidy, but the best service they can give under the double port arrangement is far below what the country ought to get for the money it pave. This is no disparage- | mentof the Beaver line company, which has | always been popular in St. John, and of | the management, which is eoterprising and accommodating. The company is probably getting no more than it deserves for taking on itself the terrible handicap of the call et Halifax. <—__ > Ex Governor Fletcher’s lecture on til]- ing the soil is the best humorous address ever given in Oregon, not excepting Bill Nye or Eli Perkins.—Daily Capital Jour- pal, Salem, Or gon Nev. 8. @S207 9849008 € 60008008 OO08 This Week We show in our windows a very pretty line of, PUFF BOXES © ® e 3 They are the latest patterns 3 and would make 4 nice pres- Ss s ° : S Ss ® 6 s s ® . ea e ent to your baby friend.
