THE ELEMENT OF GRANDEUR, WANTING.
It has been said, and the truth may be
frankly admitted, that the elements of
grandeur and majesty are mainly wanting
in the natural features of Prince Edward
Island. A Byron, sighing for “the crags
that are wild and majestic," would find
our scenery subject to the Same Censure
that he bestowed on that of England. Our
beauties are "tame and domestic " to Such
tastes as his. Akenside has told US tha-U
“one admires the vast alone, the wonder-
ful, the wild; another sighs for harmony
and peace and gentlest beauty." The
latter class is, we think by far the l¢\I`8f*l`-
Shakespeare might delight to look abroad
from some high crirr while rignenings fired
the M-gh of Heaven, while thunders
rocked the ground and ocean billows rose
to mountain heights, but there are few
Shakespeares or Byrons in thishard work-
ing and rather commonplace world.
It is the world`s restless spirits that de-
light most in the sublimities of cloud-
capped mountains, bold clii1`s, the thun-
der storm and the hurricane. We recall
once when a steamer load of pleasure
'seekers sailed up the Sa8’\19UaY and the
boat stopped for a few minutes close be-
neath the over-hangillkcliff Of 039° Et°"“‘
ny, rising nearly 2.000 feetperr>sr1di°\11MlY
aboveand seeming to touch the sky.There
was a sense of oppression followed by a
tired feeling, as a result of |r11Zil18s 0”
this sombre and silent Zl`1md°“1`° Nnure
had here rent a mountain chain asunder,
and we felt our minds wrought “D W high
tension in looking upon the W01‘k :Of SW'
pendous force. It was not restful-

while the hurricane bowled above, While
the earthquake shook it, and fire SW¢Dt
over and enveloped it, cowered in his cave
till the perturbed elements were at rest
and went uot forth till, in the succeed-
ing calm he heard the “sti1l, small voice"
which was to the him the voice'of God.
So nature when she would give us rest
and recuperation speaks to the ear in the
whispering breeze, or the music of' rippl-
ing waters, or song of birdsi to the eye in
the sweet mystery of dawn or evening
twilight,of bloom and verdure,of soft fleet-
ing shadows from fleecyclouds high in the
blue, or the glancing moonbeams upon
the margin of some flowery stream to
spreaj his careless limbs," amid such
scenes as ours.
Nature in her gentlest moods formed
this Island as a place of rest. Our scenery
is of the-gentle and soothing sort. Our
health giving air and cool nights, the
quiet that pervades all things, enables

roar of traffic the hurry and bustle of ac-
tivity the entire mental atmosphere, if
one may coin a phrase, is infected with
restlessness. Here it is-not so.
The mental atmosphere is serene and
calm. “Nobody is in a hurry in Prince
Edward Island,” said a tourist to the
writer. Another remarked with gentle
sarcasm-“If time is money, everyxone
here must be u millionaire." But :aliour
visitors agree that the Island is beautiful
in aquiet way and serenely restful. Hither
came Sir.)`ohn Macdonald thirty years ago,
utterly broken down, worn out with t-he
wearing strife of politics and seemingly
dying. A few months repose onj this
restful Island restored: his powers and
twenty brilliant years were added to his
life.
Letother lands boast of their majestic
r scenery, and let those who delight i`n_su_ch
_ scenes go thither. VVe envy them »_not
» their exceptional attractions. In our
Emerald Isle there are a pastoral beauty,
- a healthfnlness and restfulness that are
not readily found elsewhere and exist no-
. where in larger measure. Those of the
I summer tourist class who long for rest
lore finding us out and coming hither in
V yearly increasing numbers. It is possible
_ that in the years of the future too many
` maycome and break the charm.One would
hardly like to see our fafi' Island trans-
formed into a Coney Island or Bar Har-
_bor.

It is gratifying Ito learn that Col. Boar
_ and his little force at Eland's River have
been relieved by Lord Kitchener from
jtbeir perilous position. The Dlacels a
‘ station on the Delagoa Bay Railway about
twenty miles east of Pretoria. Here they
were surrounded by greatly superior Boer
forces, and at one time it was believed
they had surrendered. When, later, it
was learned they were still holding out
their situation appeared to be desperate.

i Demonstration on the Athletic Association Park, Charlottetown, on Monday
August 27th, inst., in aid of the above-named Fund. _
Eating, drinking and dancing booths will be provided on an elaborate
scalej and attended by capable and attentive waiters.

Muttart’s Steam Riding Gallery 'has been secured for the occasion, and
Messrs. Miller Bros, of this city, have generously agreed to operate their
splendid Graphophone, free of charge, in aid of the cause.
There will be a Bicycle Competition for a valuable medal and :ther
prizes. _
The Sons of England, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Free
Masons, The Loyal Orange Lodge, The Benovelent ,Irish _ Societies, of
Charlottetown, Emerald _and Som-is, The Oddfellows, The Foresters, The
Caledonian Club, and all other National and Fraternal Societies are hereby
specially invited to join in making this demonstration a grand success, by
marching to the Park in their respective regalias.
