"Aside from these, certain local historians claimed' the honor for Coocll's Bridge, Del., on September 3, insisting that the ilug raised at Fort Stunwix was un improvised rather than a regu- larly manufactured one. "Both Preble and Fiske ure authorities, and, in the main, worthy of full conilrlence. The correct date for the first raising of thc ilag in bottle, however, is Sun- day, August 3, 1777, and, as Preble gives lt, Fort Stun- wlx was the Dlnce. “This fort stood where Rome, N. Y., now is, on the portnge between tho headwaters of thc Mohawk, run- ning east to the Hudson, and of Wood creek, running west to Oneida lake, to Oswego river and Lake Ontario, at Oswego, N. Y. This fort was defended in the sum- mer of 1177 by Colonel Peter Gansevoort in comnmml of e. regiment of New York colonial troops, consisting of eight companies. “When Burgoyns came south from Canada upon his campaign which ended in the surrender nt Sara- toga Heights on October 17, 1777, ho sent Lieutenant Colonel Barry St. Leger (acting brigadier) with about 750 regular troops, together with Indinn allies, to cross Lake Ontario to Oswego and ascend the streams to the portage and fort, which, lt was planned, he should invest and reduce, nncl then rejoin Burgoyne in the vicinity of Albany. _ "In our rseearchcs we come upon two journnle kept by officers of Gansevoorfs regiment, one that of Ensign William Colebrenth ond the other that of Cnp- tsin Abraham Bwartwout-the latter being privately 'Drinted in 1809 in an edition of 100 copies, none of EXHAUSTIVE TASKS I Think of spending several years of time and much good money to make sure of the fact thot no genuine likeness of Champlain exists! And as u further and even more striking example of the time and labor devoted to the verification of details, let me cite another instance as told mn by this inciefaiiguble seeker after historical ceriuintice: "The surrender of Fort William Henry, on the shores of Lake George. occurred, as you know. on the morning of August 9, 1757. The surrender wus made by Lieutenant Colonel Monro. In no history known to us, though ws have carefully gone through thirty standard works on the subject, is Monro's first name given. It wus George. ' "Moreover, the spelling of his last name is given in at lcust eight ways-Monro, Monroe, Monrow, Mun- ro, Munroe, Munrnw, etc.-and he is often referred to as ‘Colonel.' The huge history will be full of facsimile signa~, tures of the grert ones who pass through its pages, and in many instances these will be the first genu- ine reproductions of the sort ever made public, for here, as in other ways, we have all these years been accepting certain bits of chirogrsphy as original with certain men, wllon, in fact, their handwriting was vastly different. To get ut such signatures has often been a tlcklish task, requiring illc aid of diplomats in gaining access to documents of priceless worth, which are kept hid in` the secret places of the Old World. But such determi- nation as has bccn displayed by Mr. Burrows and Dr. Avery usually wins, and thus for they have met no obstacle beyond its power. .-- Mssrmnpmcm or w'R1'r1NG As to the literary excellence of the work, the four volumes now off the press proclaim it a masterpiece of historical writing. Dr. Avery has the rare ability of making a (ow words any n great deal, as witness this il.-scription of the discovery of America, from the first volume: "In his journal, Columbus says that on this Thurs- day they encountered a ‘heavier sea than they had met with before on the whole voyage/ and that ‘after sun- set they sailed twelve miles an hour until two hourn after midnight, going ninety miles,” When, at 2 o’clool in the mol-ning, Rodrigo do 'T`rlf\n:~_ r jhted land two leagues distant (its dlrectli .: :l ~. . : - ship is not re- corded), the mariners ‘took i' ~~_:. _i... remained under square sail, ly_ing to till iluy. “With what impatience the down must have been nwnltcd! Who can comprehend the emotions of Colum- bus in those hours? The wisdom and the .sublime faith, the persistence and the enthusiasm that for eighteen years had kept him from despair, had guided him to triumph-triumph over the snrcrs of monks and scoffs of sages, triumph over the treachery and doubts of monarchs, triumph over the errors of ages and the superstitious of millions, n triumph that revealed tho great mystery of thc occnn und realized the visions of A lifetime. Each volume thus fsr produced bas been written and rewritten, and no manuscript has been nllowgd to rcuch the printers until the best of authorities on the subjects included therein have had it in hand for ro- vision and possible correction. In this way it ls hoped to get at and preserve the truths of our history for ell tim-_~_, und to sanction these truths the wide world has been ransuckeil for nearly s quarter of a century. and neither of the men interested can say how much longer it will inke to complcio the task.
