in Charlottetown Saturday evening,
addressed large congregations in the
First Methodist and Zion Presbyterian
churches yesterday in the interests of
the $300,000 fund which is being raised
in Canada to help on the work in`itia~
ted by and is now being carried on by
the Y. M. C. A. among the military
Camps in Canada, in England and
with the boys in the trenches. Few
realize eitherthe greatness or the va-
lue of the work that is being done by
these devoted men who have volun-
teered to give of their services where-
ever required whether in the training
camps or on the battlefields. There
are thirty military branches of the Y.
M. (‘. A. in Canada, six in the Cana-
dian camps in England and 18 in tho
Clatmtiian Divisions at the front ‘Sixty
secretaries and assistants are engaged
in the work besides many volunteer
helpers. Twenty seven of these sec-
retaries have gone overseas and eigh-
teen of them are with the fighting
forces in France. At the training
camps they are distributing letter pa-
hoys. Magazines by the tens of thou-
sands are being supplied for the sol-
diers’ reading. About a carload a
mbnth is now' being sent for distribu-
tion, chiefly at the front. They are
providing good_ clean wholesome am-
usement for the boys in order to save
them from the innumerable tempta-
tions which surround them-particu-
larly at the training camps 'ln Eng-
land where, most regrettably, British
liberty, is being ahamefully abused.-
Rev. George Adam, one of the most
eloquent clergyman in England, spea-
king of the work of the Y. M. C. A. at
the training camps said:
The Y. M, C. A. la standing like
a wall between your cya and hell
itself. We in England have been
paying for this but you must help.
This Ia not a burden. This ls the
call of your gone. this is a sacred
duty to help men to save their
souls."
Premier Asquith, speaking of the
Association said: "lt is the finest
thing in Europe.”
The work has grown with the growth
of the army. lt needs help.

Major Gerald Birks of the firm of
Henry Birks & Sons. Montreal, vol-
unteered for this work, having, on
account of some slight physical de-
fect been refused admission to the
army, and is now giving his time and
his splendid business talents to the
work of the Y. M. C. A. among the sol-
diers. He is giving his services free
and paying his own expences, ln re-
cognition of his services and to enable
him to accompany the soldiers to the
front the Militia Department has ga-
zetted him Major. Associated with
him in financing and organizing the
work are several prominent montreal
business men, among them Messrs.
W. M. Birks, Abner Kingman, and J.
W. Ross. These men have spared
the time from their own business to
help in this great movement and to
see that the funds raised are ad-
ministered in the most economical and
helpful way possible.
The campaign for this $300,000 has
now been in progress for some time
and Canadian cities are responding
generously. Halifax has contributed
$12,000; Su, John, $10,000; Sydney,
per, free when necessary, among the'$2,150; Moncton. $2,000. Fredericton,
$1,550; Yarmouth $1,250; Woodstock
N. 11., $900.
Today a whirlwind campaign wil
be started in Charlottetown. At 9.31
a. m., a meeting of business -men wil'
bc held in the Y. M. C. A. rooms fo:
organization. lt is expected that six
teams of two men each will be ap
pointed _to canvass the City. It is
hoped that when these men call upon
the citizens they will be given a gene
rous and tangible welcome. Only
those who have visited the camps and
have seen the temptations confronting
the boys who so recently left their
homes pure and clean can form any
conception of the "wall between your
-we boys and hell itself” that the Y.
M. C. A. is building. A few of the
dollars now being spent in selfish
pleasures, a few of the dollars helm.-
made in the blessed shelter from the
horrors of war enjoyed by this and
other Canadian cities. will help to
build and maintain this wall. Char-
lottetown has many brave boys both at
the front and on the way there. Thcy
need this “wall." Will Charlotte-
town help to the full measure of its
ability and of its responsibility?
