CHARLOTTETOWN GUARDIAN Tiger Senses iThe Times Literary Supplement) The tiger hunts by sight, sound and smell; but General Burton (author of “The Book of the Tiger") coniders that its sense of smell 1s poor, and its other senses less acute than is ordinarfy supposed. He 1,115 one]; a tiger before the tiger has smelt him, and without boots he has walked up to within fifteen yards of a tigress in the open. The tiger is quick to see movement. for example the raising of a rifle, but much less quick to take notice of c. stationary object. Really we know very little of the senses, feel- ings, psychology ,0! the tiger. We speak of it as "brave" or “coward- ly"; but these are human con- cepts. How does a. tiger apprehend "danger"? For it the report of a rifle. the whing of a bullet, arc "noises" and nothing more; and the tiger dislikes ntfse. General Burton has seen a tiger fight to the death, and he has also seen one chased by a bull terrier. Pos- sibly the tigers courage and cow- arrlce are but tions to the circumstances of the moment. Possible War Horrors I tTOIUIIIO Globe) There was a speech in thc Can- adian House of Commons the other clay aflliich every man and woman, young and old, ought to read and deliberate upon. It is not, pleasant reading-indeed. the speaker declared that he made it; to compel people to “shudder? It to be expected in future warfare, squelch any latent spark of war enthusiasm which may be existent today. General Alexander E. Ross, sol- dler-physiciao-parliamentarian, now representing Kingston City in the House of Commons, a man highly regarded for his likable personal- ity and also for his record with the Canadian Medical Corps in wartime, raised the warning voice. His cap- abilities to do so are unquestioned. for he is qualified ori every score to analyze and interpret chemical war fare possibilities for the layman. General Ross was urging contin- ued development of aviation in Canada. He cited the immense in- crease in aviation strength of for- eign powers and the greatly enhanc- ed efficiency, and cruising and willing power of their modern aeroplanes. Then he reviewed the development of gas warfare in the late conflict-from chlorine m PhOSEenc-flfteen times stronger than chlorine-and then "mustard 88S." In the discussion on the estimates c. few days ago, amendments were moved by the Opposition with the object of lowering the salaries of the Government officials. In the suggested reduction was to be in- cluded the salaries of all school teachers; five percent on Ssfiaries up to $500, and fifteen percent on those 0V8!‘ $500. Now, just why our ad- vocates of financial reform should place the school teache s in the list for salary reduction is difficult for any member of the teaching profes- slon or any intelligent observer to ascertain. TREATING RINGWORM OF FEET-ATHLETES FOOT Just why there are still so many‘ cases of ringworm of the feet-ath- lete's foot-is hard to understand now that there has been found lo many different methods of prevent- ing and curing it. Various oint- ments containing salicylic or ben- zclc acid, or both, have been found effective in curing the condition. As mentioned before DI‘. W. L- Gould recommends the use of foot- baths of 10 to 15 per cent sodium thiosulphate. He has been successful In clearing up an epidemic in a boys‘ school. by this method alone, in about a mouth. By making it necessary for the boys to walk through these baths on their way to and from the swimming pool I cure was obtained in every case and the epidemic stamped out. I have spoken before about the various methods of preventing the feet perspirlng too freshly arid giv- lng off a disagreeable odor. These methods were the use of cork soles or blotting paper soaked Int a bor- acic acid solution-a tcaspooiiful w the pint of watch-the use of gly- cerine, and powders such as boracic acid, sodium sallcytafe, and potas- sium permanganate. One method as used by Dr. Al- tl-iofi of Berlin recommended the use of formaldehyde in these cases. The fcet should be thoroughly washed with warm water and soap, rinsed and dried. Then the soles and skin between the toes are painted with equal parts of 35 per cent formalde- hyde (commercial) and distilled ivatcr. The solution should dry be- fore tlie foot ls covered. This treat- ment should be repeated three days iii successi -n. The sweatinl 511d odor disappear and the effect lasts from four to six weeks. Dr. Yandell Henderson, of Yale. observed that when shoes are left from eight to sixty hours in a closed box containing a small dish of for- ' maldehyde the vapor sterllizes all the yeast like organisms. Leather absorbs considerable amounts of formaldehyde vapor, when It gives off again for many hours after- wards. When shoes are treated thus and are worn during the day there is l1 distinct lessening or complete disappearance of infection of the skin. Also thc feet are protected against being relnfected by the shoes. The thought then is that if the various olntments or other methods cf treating athletes foot seem to bc giving poor results, disinfecting the shoes by the use of formaldehyde vapor may bc all that is needed to aflect a cure and prevent reinfec- tion.
