UPEI’S Apartheid Connection: To Be Or Not To Be On January 12, 1986, the Student Union banned the sale of Carling O’Keefe products © in the Student Union Building. Carling O’Keefe is controlled by Rothman’s Canada, a sub- sidiary of ;Rothman’s Pall Mall International, which in turn is controlled by the Op- penheimer Group, the largest consortium in South Africa. Since the UPEISU ban began, Student Wnions across the country who made the same decision have been re-evaluat- ing their stand. The UPEI Student Union is about to do the same. The question is one of prin- ciples andi one of direct rami- fications. The decision to ban was originally made by Coun- cil to uphold a principle: the principle of opposition to the Apartheid policy of the South African government, and the Oppenheimer Group’s partici- pation in that social system. The local ramifications are the loss of potential sponsorship from Carling O’Keefe for Stu- dent Union events (in the form of donatdd Miller and Carls- berg products), and the ab- sence Of Miller and Carlsberg beer sales and Rothmans ci- garette sales in the Student Union building. A further complication of Are you frustrated because you don’t believe your elected Student Union _ executive members are doing a good job? Do you know who the executive members are? Do you know, or could you at least recognize any Student Council members? Do you know who are running for election to the vacant positions on Council in the upcoming elections? Do you care? Well, you. will soon have the op- portunity to listen to reports from the Student Union’s executive members (and verb- ally attack their incompetence, if need be), to see who is al- ready a member of Council, and to see who is running for the issue is the fact that Labatt’s apparently also has South African connections. This re- lationship is not clear at the moment, however, and no action is planned regarding Labatt’s until further informa- tion is gathered. The re-evaluation of the Carling O’Keefe ban will take place at a Council meeting within’ the next month. Of General Meeting approacheth ... election to a Council position in the upcoming elections. This would give as many students as possible the op- portunity to attend.’’ Class cancellation for this reason is not without precedent. During the S.U. At a special meeting of Council on Monday, October course, to make a knowledge- able decision reflective of the thoughts of the student body, Councillors must know what students think about this issue. So if you have an opinion, let someone know! 13, the following agenda was approved for the General Meeting: AGENDA UPEISU GENERAL MEETING OCTOBER 28, 1986 11:30 a.m. Call to Order Approval of Agenda Introduction of Councillors Fall Elections Introduction of Candidates Executive Reports Adjournment “A General Meeting is an excellent way for students to give their elected representations some feedback’’ noted Kelley, adding ‘‘And shit, without contact with and guidance from the students, we (elected representatives) would probably end up being a bunch of self-serving Fascist bastards.”’ My Soul for a Committee Do you want to be a doctor? A lawyer? Do you want to know why the liquor prices in the Panther Lounge are what they are, or do you want to change them? This is your chance! There are several positions available on Student Union committees. They include: i) Panther Lounge Manage- ment Committee: One more student will be selected to serve on this committee. If you are a student, and you are interested in the Panther Lounge, then you are eligible. Here’s your chance to have some direct input into the de- cisions made regarding the operations of the Lounge. If interested, leave your name and number at the Student Union office or S.U. Informa- tion Desk in the Library Lounge, or with any Student Council member. | ii) Health Plan Review Com- mittee: The Student Union will soon be evaluating its Health Plan, which is currently ad- ministered by Blue Cross. At least two other companies want the contract for the ad- ministration of the UPEISU Health Plan. Thus, this com- mittee will be making recom- mendations to Council regard- ing the Health Plan: which company shoulde be administer- ing it, what medical items should be covered by such a plan, should birth-control pills be included in the coverage (as they currently are, at a cost of $8 or $10 per student per year, whether you use them or not). Again, if interested, leave your name and phone number at the S.U. Office, at the Info Desk, or with a Councillor. iii) Student Judicial Com- mittee: Two more students are needed to fill this committee: one freshman and one sopho- more. Members of this com- mittee will be asked to serve as “‘judges’’ over cases in which rules have been broken in the Barn. So, if a Panther Lounge patron punches out a window in a drunken stupor, this com- mittee decides what disciplinary action is necessary. Committee members will be chosen by the Student Union Hiring and Selection Board. Applications must be filled out by interested students. These can be picked -up at the S.U. office, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, or at the S.U. Info
