FRANCIS BAIN BIRDATHON TO SUPPORT GEOFF HOGAN BIOLOGY RESEARCH FUND For over a decade, Geoff Hogan was a keen supporter and motivator of projects both within and outside the Natural History Society of Prince Edward Island. The significant role he played in increasing public awareness of biological systems and the biological knowledge on Prince Edward Island led the University of Prince Edward Island to name the Biology Honours Research Fund, created by the Alumni, in his honour. The interest on this fund will be utilized to assist students who want to do biological research for an undergraduate thesis so they can obtain an honours degree. Your assistance will thus serve to support in perpetuity biological research on Prince Edward Island. The members of the Natural History Society re-initiated the Bain Birdathon as a fund raiser with the specific purpose of contributing the funds raised in 1992 to the Geoff Hogan Biology Honours Research Fund. Last year's birdathon raised over $3,000 and helped bring the fund to its present total of $19,000. You can help the Society's effort toward the fund this year by sponsoring the Society's Birdathon Team. The Team expects to find between 90 and 120 species of birds during the Birdathon which is scheduled for May 29, 1993. If the weather is quite poor, the Team will conduct a count within seven days either before or after this date. The Team includes Ray Cooke, Roberta Palmer, Bill Bowerbank, D.G. Stewart, Linda Thomas, and Dan McAskill. The count will be conducted under the American Birding Association Rules. ' To contribute to the Birdathon, simply fill in your name on the attached form. If it is a flat pledge for the count, it would save money and time if you would submit your pledge with the sheet. Cheques should be made payable to the Geoff Hogan Biology Honours Research Fund. Visa and Mastercard pledges will be accepted if you complete and signs the form provided below. An upcoming copy of the newsletter will provide a report on the number of species seen and they must turn in their completed forms and the money by June 7th to the Island Nature Trust office. If someone requests a pledge collector's form, have them contact Diane Griffin or Barb McDonald at the Island Nature Trust office at 892-7513 or Dan McAskill at 569-4351 (evenings). A tax creditable receipt will be automatically issued by U.P.E.I. for all donations to the Birdathon of $10 or more. Receipts for lesser amounts will be sent if you place an asterisk by the pledge amount. I pledge $ to the Birdathon. Please make cheques payable to the Geoff Hogan Biology Honours Research Fund. I prefer to pay with my VISA or my Mastercard. (Please circle one). The number is as follows: Expiry Date: Signature: -15-
