A Remarkable Hlopement and its Singular Denousment. Upper Province journals fur nish de- tails of an elopement which last week created quite a sensation in the Dom- inion expital. Yesterday week two voung girls, foarteen years old of respec- table Ottawa families, obtained their parents consent to attend a pic-nic. They did notretarn as expected, ion- ; quiry broughi to ligelat the fact that o ; boy some sixteen years old had started on the sume excursion, and also had not returned. Another boy of like age wanted (o attend ihe same pic-nie, but had been prevented by his mother, who on his persisting ith % professed deter- mination to ge, had summarily locked him up. Probably this youth, as the day wanod, let the fact leak out that the proper name of the soscalied pic-nic Was elopement. However, itwas known ov Tuesday night that the two young girls and the one boy had departed per rail- way in company for distant parts. The “ followio: morning, the father of one ol the girls took the road in pursuit. Al- riving at Ogdensburg, he found traces of the runaways, the conductor having noticed them on the traia the previous day, seemingly en account of their spoony manifestations. On the arrivai of the train at Uticaat 10.30 p. m., the eonducier beheld the adventurous youth on the platform, and tried to capture him but failed, The pursuing parent made his way to an hotel, and the youth dog- ged him thither te leara whe the pur- suers were, Ho was noliced, and traced sa tinge sie: : toa boarding houre, whetner the ag- 4 grieved nd angry parent hastened, and *, $ there found all three elopers. The youth ‘s whose name is Wilmot, passed as Master : Gordon and his beloved as his sister Miss Gordon, and her female companion as Miss Kingstord-—all fiom Quebec. The girls astonished, frightened, but glad, for they had begun to realize their fully, received a solemn lecture; but for Master Wilmot treatment of a rather more drastic character wasin store. He} wus not considered worthy of a good horsewhipping, so the irate parent turned the boy over his knee and ad- ministered an old-time spanking in a highly satisfactory manner. On the following day the girls were borne back to their omes somewhat sadder but a good deal wiser. It was reported that a goodnatured Yankee mugistrate had married Mester Wilmot to the choice of his heart. But that does not appear to betrue. The boy had 880 when he started, bis own monoy, and had whea found at Utica obtained a situation. The girls were enquiring for employ: ment at the shops. No doubt it would be found on enquiry that the silly crea- tures have been diligent readers of dime novel literature, sud fancied that in elopiny: as they did, they were acting in the must romantic fashion.
