CHASED BY SHARKS IN Brprorp Basry. -Warren Smith and Ham, while eut prac- tising in their shell on the Basin, a day or twe ago, were chased by a large shark, and the race they rowed was one well calculated to try their speed had anyone been at hand with a watch. ‘The shark several times got so near that it turned on its back to seize one of the dela the frail boats in its jaws, but y thus caused enabled the earsmen to vet away. They finally reached water, Where their blood-thirsty pursuer could not follow them. Ham was ont alone, later in the day, and Was again chased by a shark, but get out of the way. This will be cheerful news to these who hathe in the Basin. i ’ SHOAL ; _< ('4ALLENGE.—We hereby offer to match our pacing gelding ‘‘Donald” against Mr, Robt. Dr. Tanner has been weighed six times since he entered upon his fast, and the scales show that he is growing beautifully less by degrees. When he started on his go-as-you-please against starvation, he weighed 1475 lbs., the temperature of his body was ninety-nine degrees, and his pulse averaged about eighty-eight. This morning he left his cot in the balcony on the main hall and jay dewn in his old bed in the centre ef the hall. A number ef persons were present at the time and regarded the faster with interest. NortH Sypney, July 15, A serious stabbing aflray occurred last night, about midnight, on board the bark >_> ‘Bachelors,’ now lying et the G. M. Association's pier, loading coal for St. John, N. B. Sheis from Rouen. <A sea- man, Geo. Flanagan, along with four others, were on deck about midnight, drunk and makiag a hoise, and the first mate, Mr. Smith, was trying to keep them from going on shore to get more liquor, when this Flanagan stabbed the mate, it is supposed with a sheath knife. The knife entered above the right lung, going ina slanting position, downwards through the lung. The doctor says if it had gone in a straight line he would never have breathed again. Flanagan was arrested and lodged in jail. The other three were found in the weeds in the morning, having deserted, and were also ledged in jail. Their trial comes off to-morrow. The mate is in a pretty bad conditien. The woman , suffrag ists of the Uatied States, though treated withscant courtesy by the two great political parties, still do A lose hope that their aspirations will be realized at no remote period. They will doubtless feel encouraged to persevere in their efforts wheu they hear that the negroes of Bolonda, in Africa, are advanced woman suflragists, Their women sit in the councils of state, bring their husbands to their villages when they marry, have the sole right of pronouncing a divorce and of ret aining the children in that event, and govern the opposite sex ia the smallest matters of domestic economy. The Lrish -Times, in the course of an artic.e vii Mir. Foster's bill, makes the fol- lowing statement :—‘* It is an important fact, however, that ‘there is no great feel- ing apparent in favour of the measure among the tenantry.
