A CANADIAN ANNIVERSARY
Une hundred years ago. October
12th 1812, General Bir Isaac Brock
12d a company of two hundred Cana-
dians Voluuteers up Queenstou Heights
in aniattempt to recapture the posi-
tion wliieh, before daylight, had been
taken by invaders from the United
States. The attempt failed, the enemy
occupying a commanding position and
being securely entrenched and hidden
by crazs and trees. General Brock
fell, mortnlly wounded. They bore
him from the place where he fell to n
house at the loot of the hill where his
comrades covered his lifeless form
and then went back to the *Work he
had left them to do. Under Lieuten-
ant- Colonel McDonell the attempt
was asain made and unsuccessfully.
McDonell was -killed and the little
band was again ` forced to retreat.
While the Canadians were RR'-l1¢fi“8
up their scattered forces _the Ameri-
cans were joined by further rein-
forcements from across the river and
the crest of the hill became a verit-
able stronghold of the enemy. Gener-
al Stiealie. who now assumed comf
mand of the Canadians recognizing
the futility of attempting ii charge up
the iiin i_ii tiié nice oi the iiiinitioii
rnade to the enemy's force and their
commanding position, made a long
detour through the fields and woods
behind Queenstown. He gained the
heights unseen and the battle began.
So sudden and fierce .was the on-
slaught that panic seized the Ameri-
cans. Scnrcely waiting to fire a vol-
ley they fled by hundreds down ° the
mountains followed by the Canadians
eager to avenge the death of their
General. The rout was complete. The
Americans surrendered, the General
sixty ofliccrs and over nine hundred
were taken prisoners.
FARM HELP
Tb: prolilczn facing the farmers of
this province today is the securing of
help, male and female, and involved
witbthe problem there are many mat-
ters for serious consideration. First
of all there is the question of wages.
'l_‘he'complaint is _i made, and with
some justification, that labor is more
liberally paid in town and city than
ly not as great as it is represented
to be.
During the past few weeks when the
farmers in the vicinity of Charlotte-
town were in the midst of their har-
vest and ready to employ anybody
that could handle a fonk or carry a
sherif of grain, and pay tbmn a dollar
a day and board, they found it abso-
lutely impossible to procure,auy help.
At the same time b tween ii dozen
and two dozen able xodicd laborers
were occupying seats on the parks in
Charlottetown or loafing around the
street corners waiting foo some one to
oxiur them work on the streets or
shnvclling coal at ai dollar and fifty
cents it day. The difference between a
dollnr'i\ day and board, and it dollar
and a half without board is very
little and the unwillingness of these
be looaed for elsewhere. The men
simply didn’t want work and the fact
that there were several of 'them idle
while there was any amount of work
to do has no bearing whatever on the
farnier's problein.- Every city has its
loiifcrs as every field has its weeds
and, like the lilies of the field, "they
toil not, neither do they spin."
Why cannot the farmer procure
help as readily as the factory, the
store, the warehouse where wages are
about on an equality? This is the

demand for expert labor, no bolw of
advancement. This may never be se-
medied; the work of the farm in its
most advanced developments muy
continue to be of the kind that can
one directing head, that of the owner;
but it would appear to the onlooker
from the outside that so great and
iniportnnt ii calling, one with the in-
finite possibilities of soil and air to
dran' from, should have a place for
brain and intellect amongst its cm-
yployers as ivell as for hands and fcct.
