LAUGH 4 AT -KRUGER. ie who is returning to A Hollander Europe after fighting with the Boers says they are not worth assisting. Burghers are leaving, he says, for their homes in batches of tens and twenties, and those left are either loafing or carousing at Machadodorp. ‘They are mostly Frenchmen, Germans, Holland- ers and Irish who are now at the front. Mr. Kruger, after visiting his burgh- ers at Machadodorp, issued another proclamtion exhorting the Boers to ‘stand fast and fight well,’ and to‘ lure the enemy within rifle range and shoot him down.’ In this way, he says, they will ultimately triurnph, and retain their independence. The document asks ‘help from the Lord;’ then follow several Bible quctations. It is reported that the burghers now receive these periodical religious mani- festatos with laughter. §General Botha is said to have replied to it to the ef- fect that the proclamation was un- necessary, and that the burghers would fight together. He boastingly asserts that he will not surrender like Cronje. THE EVER-YOUNG CHIEF. Lord Roberts is daily displaying wonderfnl energy. He rises at day- break, examines and replies to all tele- grams which have arrived over night. After breakfast he consults with the heads of the different departments while in the afternoon he is in the saddle, and sometimes covers enor- mous distances. A characteristic anedote of the commander-in-chief is at present going the round of the camps. While Sir Redvers Buller was here he accom- panied Lord Roberts one afternoon on a ride to the wester part of the town, where a small steeplechase course had been arranged for a weekly paper- chase. Lord Roberts, turning to General Buller, said, ‘Come, Buller, let us take the jumps ?’ ‘T90 old for that, sir,’ re- plied Sir Redvers. Whereupon the the commander-in-chief ,cantered for- ward and took all the jumps. LITTLE BOBS” REWARD. He lauds him in the London Daily Mail with fluent and spontaneous enthusiasm, and betrays that affectionate respect which the field marshal seems to in- spire in every one. Lord Roberts seems to have all the virtues. He is SOREN MEN OE LOA ROE EI SS. STE Julian Ralph, who still | ———- Sn ee so unaffe: tz .dly pious; HE 1S TEMPERATE, of course, and unlike Grant he doesn’t smoke tobacco, The newspapers are discussing what his reward will be when he finishes his work and comes home. One opinion is that he is too poor to be duke, and that parliament will not venture to vote him money enough to support the dignity of that rank, but that he will be made an earl aud given a hundred thousand pounds and the blue ribbon of the garter, No British general since Wellington has ever been a knight of the garter. That honor constitutes a degree too sublime, ordinarily, to be achieved except by supreme discrimination in being born. About twenty first chop British peers and five members of the royal family are knights of the garter, all the other members being kings. TRICKS OF IMMIGRATION AGENTS. It is stated that many immigrants to Canada have been diverted from their original intention to settle there by the tricks of Yankee immigration agents. | The following dialogue is represented to have taken place between two Yan- kee agents, who skipped aboard the cars outside Montreal, and began talk- ing to a batch of emigrants, Agents No. 1—‘D’ye mind the cold time we had in Saskatchewan?’ Agent No. 2—‘I guess I do. Didn’t all our stock get froze to death by the summer frosts?’ Agent No. 1—‘Not all, surely. There was that little red cow that we tried to keep alive inthe cellar through the winter. If you remember, she got out somehowt and was froze solid outside, and ’twasn’t till July next that we thaw- ed her out.’ Agent No. 2—‘Thawed her out? No, | sir Why, din’t we milk ice-cream from her all that summer?’ What You Pay For Medicine is no Test of Its Curative Value—Pre- scriptions Versus Dr. Chase’s Kidnéy- Liver Pills. Dr. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pills are just as much a doctor's prescription as any formula your family physician can give you. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pills were per- fected after the formula had proven it- self of inestimable value in seores of hundreds of cases. Dr. Chase won almost as much popu- larity from his ability to cure kidney disease, liver complaint, and backache, with this formula, as he did from the publication of his great recipe book. The idea of one treatment reaching , the kidneys and liver at the same time was original with Dr. Chase. It ac- counts for the success of Dr. Chase's Kidney-Liver Pills in curing the most complicated ailments of the filtering organs, and every form of backache. As a family medicine Dr. Chase’s Kidney-Liver Pills are unapproached. They keep the kidneys, liver, and bow- els healthy, active, and regular, and 60 prevent and cure nine-tenths of the ills to which humanity is subject.
