When people' think of the Japanese they [always think -of rice; but you should understand that we are not ‘rice caters' in that way any more. Now we eat ries as you do corn It is one of our staples, thai.'s all. Some years ago my father investigated the ‘berlberi' disease, a sort of dmpsloal scurvy that our sailors were suffering from, and be discovered that undue con- sumptlorl of rice was one of the principal causes of lhetfouble. He at once ordered the reduction of the rice supply. Its place was taken by other food. ', nf. ... |iilPHiii’S HUME ST. Joim, N. B., April 5.-The Orange Grarid Lodge of New Brunswick inet on Tuesday at Woodstock. The subject- of perhaps the greatest interest before the lodge is the founding of an orphan's home in the maritime provinces. It will be i‘emer:nbered'that this suggestion was made a year or two ago in the New Brunswick lodge. Last year the Grand Lodge of Prince Edward Island supported the proposal and it was further discussed at the meeting of the New Brunswick lodge. Later on, in June, 1905, Nova Scotia also joined with the other two provinces and appointed a committee to meet similar committees for the discus- sion of ibe undertaking. It is understood that the committees from the three Provincial Grand Lodges have arranged to meet in Amherst within a faw weeks. A property _at or near Amherst has been secured for the pun poses of the order, and it is anticipated that there will be no serious rllfilculiyin the way of getting this institution in operation. The orphanage will be for children of deceased members of the order only, and will be supported by contri- butions nud funds of the various lodges. ml $100 Reward, $ico The readers of this paper will beJ1iease. ii. i.
