Press Club, contributes a charming article on the Garden of the Gulf to the Witness and Can- adian Homestead of July 10th. She thus describes her first impressions of the Island: “Prom the car windows my eyes rested upon such a landscape as I had not seen anywhere else, even in pictures. The greenness of the countryside was simply startling in its brilliance. the trees and fields tinged with a mofc brilliant emer- ald color than I imagined could be possible in nature. I thought of Ire- land and wondered which of these two islands could be the greener and more beautiful. And then, as our train pulled out of Borden I began tomake further discovery, another surprising One at that. ‘The earth was a brilliant terrs-cotts. color, so red that it looked as though tons upon tons of nice new bricks had been crushed and laid over the entire landscape! Everywhere June plough- ing was being carried on and the warm red hue of the fields 6f fresh- ly tumed-up earth made a. gigantic checker board, squares of red and brilliant green alternating as we ran through wooded, or agricultural re- gions. "Dev- onshire in Ireland" or as someone has more aptly phrased it, "Irish turf on Devon soils under an Italian sky." The figure of speech is quite accurate." . Miss De Soyres was delighted with her visit to Charlottetown and she says so frankly and gracefully. Af- ter describing her visit to and im- prmsioris . of the Confederation Chamber, she continues: "After the incessant turmoil of Montreal streets the sequestered. chestnut-lined av- enues of Charlottetown were a haven of quiet and peace. The City Fath- ers apparently believe in encourag- _ ing the townsfolk to indulge freely in fresh air and meditation, for in all directions through the town itself and the suburbs, one encountered benches set in shady corners or along the walks and drives, and the parks and squares-Just a short distance from the centre of the town is one of the prettiest little‘ parks to be found anywhere, named after Queen Victoria. Here are glorious woods of evergreens and birch intersected with winding paths leading to and from the water's edge, where bathing fa- cilities nre available. Not far away is old Government House. Its frontage forms a magnificent Colonial facade of pillars and portico, through which in bygone days many scenes ofbril- liance were enacted. The present Lieut-Governor, the Hon. Mr. Hearts, resides -in the neighborhood, but in a splendid mansion of much more recent date. He is extremely popu- lar with Prince Edward Islanders, who speak enthusiastically about his hospitality and his. success as an ambassador of good-will in other parts of Canada and abroad. "The houses o; Charlottetown are stamped with an indefinable some- thing that strikes one as very dif- ferent to those in upper Canadian cities.
