Men’s Baksetball Fri-Sat March 14-16 CIS Final@Halifax UPEI Men's Basketball Captures 2003 AUS Championship March Madness will be felt for a little while longer around UPEI as the Men's Basketball team, prepare the CIS championship, after the amazing run to claim the AUS Championship this past weekend. , On Friday, the Panthers were able to move past their final season loss to the Dalhousie Tigers, and showed that they had learned from their mistakes as UPEI defeated Dalhousie 65-53 in quarterfinal action. Tyler Wood lead the way for the Panthers scoring 15 points. Saturday, the Panthers faced the three-time defending champions St. FX, and were able to pull off the upset, as they defeated the X-Men in a 72-71 nail-biter. Tyler Wood once again lead the Panthers Players of with 27 points. The win gave the Panthers a free trip to the CIS Championship, but UPEI still had work to do. Sunday, UPEI faced Saint Mary's in a battle for AUS supremacy. Led by fourth year co-captain Jeff Walker (scored 20 points), the Panthers were able to get out to an early lead, and kept their focus for the rest of the match. With four players in double-digit scoring including Walker, Tyler Wood (15 points), Sherone Edwards, and Jason Aucoin (13 points), the Panthers showed that UPEI was a team that could win using any of their players. In the end, all of the AUS took notice of UPEI Men's Basketball team, who earned their first AUS Championship since 1989, in a 74-65 victory. the Week Tyler Wood: Male The male player of week twenty-one of the sports season is Tyler Wood. Tyler play three huge games this past weekend, as the UPEI Panthers won their first AUS basketball championship in over a decade. Friday, dur- ing quarter final action, Tyler scored 15 points as UPEI defeated Dalhousie 65-53. Saturday, Tyler played what was possibly his best game of the year scoring 27 points, and lead the Panthers to a 72-71 victory over the three-time defending champion St. FX X- Men. Sunday, Tyler again played a solid game, and despite getting into early foul trou- ble, managed to score 15 points, as UPEI defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 74-65. With a weekend total of 57 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 7 steals, Tyler was named AUS tournament MVP. Tyler is a graduate from Palm Beach Gardens H.S. in Florida, and is currently in his second year of his Arts program. Katherine Walter: Female The female player of week twenty-one of the sports season is Katherine Walter. Katherine played a solid game against the Saint Mary's Huskies in the quarter finals of the AUS Basketball Championship this past weekend. Katherine led the panthers in scoring with eleven points and added two rebounds. However, the Huskies proved to be too much for the panthers despite Katherine's efforts, as UPEI lost the game 59-42. Katherine is a graduate from Colonel Gray Senior High School, and is currently in her second year of the business program. In her spare time Katherine enjoys reading, soccer, play- ing the dare game, shopping, and going on road trips. Her future plans include either going to law school or becoming a forensic scientist. page 15
