Two-year-old Jackie Rice is dead and his parents, Mr. and Mrs, Les- lie Rice of Bedford, are in i very critical condition in the City Hos- p al as a result of an accident in which their automobile was struck by the eastern train about ii o'clock yesterday morning. A fourth passenger in the Ford coupe, Pts. Duo Hachey of Barricfield, Ontario, is also a patient in the hospital with a. broken leg and a, fractured ankle. At a. late hour last night, Mr. Rice was still unconscious. The young son of the driver of the car passed away in the hospit- al about four dclock yesterday afternoon. The father was believed to be suffering from a skull in-' jury while his wife who had re- gained consciousness a while after the accident, was believed w have suffered internal injuries. Pte. Hachey, who was here on a short leave and was enroute Charlottetown to retu.n to his urut in Barriefield, suffered multiple bruises as well as the fractures to both legs. However, he was report- ed to be improving and his condi- tion was not believed to be scri- ous. It is believed that the view of the car driver was obstructed as he neared the crossing and he did not notice tihe train which was slowing down for a stop at Bedford station, with the result that he ran into it. Police said the car was not working well at the time. It was badly wrecked by the impact of the colli- sion. Las fail s. delivery truck was demolished when struck by the train at the same crossing but r-he driver escaped serious injury.
