According to the Chicago Times Unior, the glut in the horse market has left 125,- 000 of these noble animals roaming about the prairies of North Dakota, Montana, etouthern Idabo and Washington. There is no demand for them and they are eating the grass that belongs to the cattle and rheep. The introduction of electric cars redaced the demand for the animals so much that the shipment from thease west- ern ranches to the East and middle States On one railroad alone dropped from 10,800 a year to less than 2,000, One rancher near Walla Walla, Wasningtno, lias 3560 horses and would be glad to bunch them off as $10 a head, although he claims that they are bred from high priced stock. Following the electric car came the bicycle just as the ranch owners, who had turned their attention to breeding driving horses until they attempted to rival Kentuckey, were ready to realize from their investment. The demand was cut off short, and they a‘e natural)v discouraged. A part of the surplus is no doubt‘due to the over pro- duction for even norma) times, as the ranchmen became dissatisfied with sheep because of the tariff fluctuations, and went into horse breeding on an extended scale None of them expected that the use of machinary would crowd out so abruptly and generally the use of horses, and with the prospect of motor car: iages the outlook is still more discouraging., They cannot even afford to break in and train the colts and are wondering what todo with them, for to save the feed for profitable stock they must get rid of the useless aniinale somehow. *o-- ---—— TRAVEL WITH THE MAIL. The following despatch appears in the London Times of 29th July last: “H. M.S. Majestic—At sea, Tuesday, July 28th.--I deeply regret to have to record the death by drowning of two officers of the Hermione—the first lieutenant, Mr. Angustus R.C. Warren, andthe senior assistant engineer, Mr. John P. Good. It It appears that, about nine o'clock this morning, when the fleet was off the Shan- non, Mr. Good fell overboard and Lieuten ant Warren immediately jumped overboard to his rescue, The fleet was steaming at fourteen knots atthetime. The though rough, was not running heavily, but was lumpy and Joppy under a fresh sea, following breeze. The litebuoy was let goanda beat was lowered without delay, the Hermione hauling out of line and aiteriug course so as to stand by her boat. As soon as the accident wax | observed from the flagship, tLe speed of | the fleet was reduced so as not to leave the Hermione to far astern and to render her assistance if necessary, After making a careful search, however, the Hermione signalled that both men were lost. The circumstances in which Mr. Good fell over- board have not yet been reported, but no more information is needed to illustrate the heroic act of self-sacrifice bv which Lieut. Warren lost his life. The instinctive comradeship and the uvhesitating courage which prompt such an act are some of the noblest attributes o° the naval services and though we cannot but mourn their consequences in this particular case and offer a respectful sym— pathy to the friends of the lost, yet even the most deeply bereft must feel lation in the reflection that both men have died in the service of their countrv, that such a death as that of Lieutenant Warren 18 preeemintly worthy of the noble service which it illustrates aud adorns.” As the Week remarks: this despatch states everything that is required. It is worthy of the snbject. The self-sacrifice of Lieutenant Warren shows that English sailors are true men still.
