Dvurine the late session of the Provin- cial Legi-lature Mr M McKinnon, the ener- getic representative of the Murray Harbor District, asked the Leader of the Government to bring dowa certain infermation regarding the steam-~ er Alameda. He desired tohave tabled a copy of the agreement between the Gov- ernment and the owner of the steamer, tog-ther with a statement showing the amount of the subsidy agreeed to be paid, the amount actually paid, the amount with heldand the reason for withholding the same. Hoo Mr Warburton, ip reply informed Mr. McKinnon that there was a dispute about the contract, but he would be able to give the information asked for in a few Later on he intimated that the cons tract had been let for $1000, that there was a dispute with thecontractor which had been settled and that a sma!lsum had been with held with which the contractor was satis- fied. But the copy of the agreement asked for was not tabled, neither was a reason given for witholding any part of the con- tractor’s money. The question therefore remains uvanswered. days. The object of the question, it is under- stood, was not to ascertain whether the owner of the Alameda wasor was not satis~ fied, but to get at the agreement, which is believed to be a fair sample of maay other Government agreements, loaded down with conditions not necessary for the public welfare however useful they party purposes. It is too often the case thatin public contracts, the outcome of which may be eatisfactory may be for to both Government and coutractor, the people, whose money i+ apent, are refused information to they ure justly entitled, which In tbe case under consideration the informa'tion asked for should most certain ly have been tabled. + A Ary York Notes.
