At present, the' fishery of Prince Edward Island is almost exclusively of an inshore and as tuarial nature. One offshore ves- sel. the Sourls II. has been oper- ating since the fall of last year and three additional 60-ft. dragg- ers are presently being built for use by Island fishermen. Al- though the question of develop- ment seems to bring offshore pos- sibilities almost automatically to mind. there are some important posdbllitles for the development of the inshore fishery which should not be neglected. In the lobster fishery, there is no doubt that the value of the catch could be substantially in- creased by (1) better protection of short and berried lobsters; (2! a higher and more uniform qual- ity of the pack of canned lobster: (3) better marketing of canned and fresh lobsters. The inshore groundfish fishery appears to be capable of consid- erable expansion but that seems to be largely dependent on the market for the canned and salted product. The volume of ground- flsh landed on any one section of the coast at present is not sufficient to warrant investment in other processing facilities. and it is likely htat the industry will have to turn to offshore supplies if any extensive investment is to be rendered economically feasible Herring and mackerel are very erratic in their appearance in- shore and this is a serious limit- ing factor to further develop- ment. Howcver. even with the present methods of catching. it x . -tr. GUARDIAN. CHARLOTTETOWN Make News Reel Pictures of live lobster Ecking A National Film Board camera man was in Summersidc yesterday making a news reel of the process of packing live lobsters at the can- nery of Jenkins Bros. Ltd. This is the only place in the world that lobsters are packed alive com- mercially. It is s very interesting process and has been developed by the Live-Pair Corporation of Bos- ton. Mass.. who have granted a franchise to the Island Trading Company. a registered partnership composed of Messrs. C. F. Camer- on, W. E. Jenkins and J. B. Jenk- ins. They in turn granted a licence to Jenkins Bros. Ltd. Lobster: are found naturally only in North Atlantic waters and they breathe in air from the wat- er so the general idea is to re- produce North Atlantic sea water synthetically. This is done by means of a substance. for which the Live-Pak Corporation holds the patents. which they call lob- ster conditioner. This. when add- ed to water. dissolves the waste product of the lobster and provides the lobster with food. In this way lobsters can be kept alive in a can for a minimum of eight days. At the Jenkins cannery is a large tank of water to which this lobster conditioner has heen added, and lobsters are kept. here preparatory to being packed alive. ly and lobsters can live in it. in- definitely. It has been proven that when lobsters are placed in the tank in a weakened condition they land Briggs lran and Briggs Juniors. The water is changed continuous-' Sport Echoes Fnm Prince County Johnny Flynn. young Bostonian pitcher. who Played Wllh Cu-"3" last year, is in town again and will, bolster the pitch- ing department of this year's Cur- Johnny has been playing ball in Boston all summer and should be in shape. . 0 .
