But the followers‘of Erastus Wiman are in the habit of applying the word to all the wild and unreasonable schemes which have been promulgated within the last two or three years for the purpose of promoting the an- nexation of Canada to the United States. The Hitt and Butterworth propositions were plainly of this nature. Yet strange to say our Cartwrights and Lauriers, after many wry faces, embraced these schemes. [The Wiberal-Conservative party stands to-day where it has ever stood on the question of our trade relations with the United States. A treaty such as that adopted in 1854, with such modifications or enlargements as time and circumstances render necessary, has ever been the policy of the Government of Sir John McDonald. In proof of this we have only to refer to the standing offer of Reciprocity contained in the tariff bill of 1879, and the offer made trade relations. Premier, to guard our own markets, to im- prove the means of interprovincial com- munication, and to scout treasonable pro- posals involving the surrender of the con- trol of our own tariff, while at the same time ever standing ready to enter into more the United Our extended trade relations with States, has already borne good fruit. greater Canada beyond the lakes and our ever expanding home market in the older provinces, stand as monuments of the stateamanship of Sir Joha Macdonald. The insults which have been heaped on Canada by the Butterworth bill, the Hitt resvlutions and the Non-intercourse bill, are due tothe folly of the Grit lea lers in listen- ing to the nonsensical speeches of Wiman and his gang, and to the Yankee delusion that Cartwright and Laurier represented, to any extent, true Canadian sentiment. A partial mesure of Reciprocity, such as the one formerly in operation, has always been Conservative the Liberal The caterpillar referred to is an unusual- ly large and fine specimen of the larva of our largest moth, ordinarily not abundant in this Island—the Platysamia Cecropi (Attacus C,, Hyalophora C.) It feeds upon the leaves of apple, plum, wild cherry an ‘other trees, appearing at times in suc | numbers as to entirely defoliate an thus seriously injure young fruit trees. Mr. Haszard has presented the specimen to the Natural His- tory Society, and I have placed in his window a cocoon in which the caterpillar spends its pupa life, emerging in due time a weak and comparatively puny creature, but in a few hours a magnificent moth. A very faithful representation of the perfect insect may be seen ina book in the window beside the caterpillar and cocoon, The moth belongs to the Bombycidee or silk spinning moths, and it is stated that while the strands of the cocoon are so inseparably agglutinated as to forbid the unwinding of the silk, the cocoon has been varded, spun and knitted into stockings which wash like linen.
