In the first place, we ure informed by Rev. Father Burke that the presence ofadclegatlon from the Manufacturers, ntthe Board of Trade meeting he ad- dressed in Toronto, was altogether unex- pected. A number of the members were anxious to attend and, while he was quite anxious to place the Island's claim before nil Influential bodies, he left It to thc Board of Trade, as was quite proper, to say who should or who should not at tend their meeting. When before thcm he gave thenlall the available informa- tion on all phases of the communication question. The tlguresas to imports are altogether problematicul-unfortunately we cannot get at the exact ones-but those given were rather within that without the mark. When his address wus'over and the numerous questions answered, Messrs Howland, Gage, Allan, Blain and others spoke most fiatterlngly nflt nndapprovingly of its object; then the Manufacturers' representatives, and its transportation expert particularly, dc- clnred themselves captivated with the scheme and publicly asked Father Burke to present it to their numerous renders ln their grcntjournal, Industrial Canada, ri duty he was delighted to take upon himself. The Canadian Manufacturers’ Associa- tion are not us everyone knows, n public body like thc bormlei of tradctnud, there- fore, they should not be expected, and were not expected to take up political or quasi-political questions like provincial relations; but in so far as trade ln manu- factured goods was concerned they were deoplyinterested and moved. The tele- grams published than put them in u false light as well as ourselves, and hence the Association writes through its sec- retary and other oilicials to complain. In a letter to Father Burke, Secretary Younge makes haste to say that whilst the Association did not cali upon the Governmenttobuiid the Tunnel as such action was not within its province, “I can say without hesitation that the committee considering the matter appear- ed unanimously to favor the proposition so far us their individual views were concerned." The Minute of Council pass- ed,ucopy of which is before ns, shows exactly the same warm and friendly feeling. No doubt the Tunnel will _find ln manufacturers its warmest. supporters. Indeed, a member of thcAssociatlon writes us: “If all your` friends are rllsposcdto work as wcli or half as well as the manufacturers then the Tunnel will soon ccmc." Mr. G. M. Murray, editor of Industrial Canada, provoked at the damaging reports circul- ated, wrltesintor alla: “The reporters seem according to this, to have conveyed thcimpression that the Canadian Manu f1\cturers‘ Association has refused to endorse Prince Edward Islnnd‘a pro- posal, which, of course, is certainly not the case." J. F. M. Stewart, Asst. Sccy, writes. ln reply tothe query of a mom-‘ ber,-J. P. Murray Esq., carpet manu- facturer-"Althnugh Idld not ace the re- port in the press, I believe that it was stated in one ofthe papers so as to con- vey the impression that thc Association opposed the Tunnel. I have had the us- surance of the reporters of the Mull and Globe that the same would be looked into und, if found to be the case, corrected in their papers. I have been unable how- ever, to locate the mischievous para~ graph." Thus it would amply appear t,hatthe~Canadlan Manulaeturers‘Associa»- tion is not against the Tunnel, does not refuse toendorse the Tunnel; but is sn- xlous to be regarded as-amongst its warmest friends. The use of the Roadway ie now open to gentlemen or non-gentlemen, on footcr horseback or in carriages, not mere- ly at certain hours but at all hours of the day or night. But theuse of the Road- way for a race course is another and an altogether different thing. ' Nobody proposes that “t heGentlemen’s Club shall be forbldderv to drive and show their line horses and carriages on the Park Roadway at special times," as The Examiner lntimntes. But objection is taken to giving up the Roadway to the exclusive use _of certain privileged per- sons during certain hours. Objection is taken tolimitlng in an unlawful manner the privileges of the many for thepleasure of the few. It is not is questior. of ex- pedienoy buta question of right; not a quest-ion of restricting the Gentlemen's Driving Club from doing any lawful or proper thing, but of restricting the im- mcmorial right of the mass ol the people to use a public highway at their pleasure and at any time. _ What is proposed is beyond the power of the City Council or of the Governor in Council to authorize. Lot us assume that the City Council should attempt to grant the proposed concession, specifying, say, Friday evening between the hours of six and eight o'clock for the exclusive use of the Roadway by the Gcntlemen’s Driving Club. The humble.-st individual in the city driving a curt-horse, mule or jack-ass at it walking pace over tho Roadway with- in the prescribed hours could set- the Club pt defiance and be quite within his lcgul rights. ' _ Public highways are riot made for tho exclusive use of gentlemen; the roads und streets arc for ull, gcntlc or rough, well dressed or ill-dressed. washed or unwush- ed. It is not neccssaryto discuss in this. connection the question of thc safety of foot passengers, or of women and children who might desire to cross or drive upon the Roadway during the prescribed hours, although that has un important bearing on the proposnl.Nor is it necessary to dis cuss the populurlsingof the Park. What is proposed in a distinct invasion of public rights which it is tho duty of all good citizens to guard. - HALF SICK PEOPLE. The world is full of them.
