It is but a few years since Messrs Mackenzie and Mann, its- energetic projectors and builders, began the creation of the ‘Canadian Northern system. It has grown with incomparable rapidity u_n- til now more than 7.000 miles of spleudidly equipped railway are in operation. Thcir lines cover the three prairie Provinces, and afford one of the main outlets from tha grain country to the Great Lakes. Westward to the Pacific Coast thu extension of their system is under contract. Their steamships on the lakes connect with their railway lines in Ontario. These within a year will he connected with ,their lines line in Uape Breton und another run- ning down the Atlantic coast Of ,Nova Scotia from Halifax to Yarm- outh. , Iron and coal mines of vast extent and value, pulp mills and other industries, and palatial hotels are added to their railway interests tors to the traffic of their great railway system. The fathers of the confederation bound the Provinces together with a constitution engrossed on parchment. An equally important work of con- solidation was that of the great rail- way builders who linked Province to Province by hands of steel, spiked down and fastened to the solid earth, ovcr which the trains, like busy shut- tles of our inland commerce ply to and fro from east to west and from l The wear ii Gift l A 14k solid gold brooch safety catch and pendant attached. The Canadian North- ern is preparing for an extension of their system by steanrship lines on the Atlantic and the Pacific, linking together the Doininion and the Moth- er Country and with othqr Dominions and with foreign lands. On Tuesday evening last a banquet was given at Halifax on board the splendid ocean steamship, the Royal Edward, at which were present many of the leading representatives of the three Maritime Provinces. 'l`he Royal Edward is the pioneer of the (fana- dian Northern line on the Atlantic, throughout Quebec. They own a assubsidlary supports and contribu- plying between Halifax and Bristol in winter, with Quebec as its Cana- ldian summer port on this side. The line consists of the Royal Edward and a sister ship of equal size, speed, beauty, elegance and comfort. The ,Royal Edward is truly a magnificent ship, a floating palace, and holds the blue' ribbon for the quickest passage hctween the Mother Country and Canada. The Canadian Northern may be justly proud of this twen- tieth century ship and Halifax is al- so proud to be the home port in the Dominion of this splendid line. It was a great banquet, on board the Royal Edward at which some 'or McGregor was present qnd sD0k0 sentatives of other railways and transportation interests, of the military and naval forces of Canada and of the press of the three Provinces were pI`0Sl1nt, Bild many weighty matters were discussed or mooted, not the least noteworthy of which was the possibility and to some the desirability of the Cana- dian Northern acquiring the Inter- colonial as a part of its transcen- tinental system. On this subject there are, of course, diderences of opinion. It was a splendid banquet, which while it set the enterprise of Messrs. Mackenzie and Mann conspicuously in the foreground, also brought into bold relief the vast importance of the transportation systems of Can- ada. Those who were present from Prince Edward Island, including W. E. Bentley of the Board of Trade, and the editors of The Examiner and The Guardian, were alikq im- ,pressed in this connection, with the ,importance of improving the carry- \ing system between this I‘1'ovince and the mainland, especially in the winter season. This must be done step with her sister Provinces in the march of progress. And first and iforeniost the three-short-liaul rate must be reduced. Let our represen- tatives and the government at Ottawa realize this at once. WHISKEY AND MANSl.Al‘GHTER.
