Golden Text.- "He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as ll sheep before her shearers ls dumb so, he openetll not his mouth." - lsa. 53:7. I The trial of Jesus is a divine drama. llc was arrested toward midnight oi' Tllursday of passion week, the cause of his arrest being twofold: (1) his trlumphal elltry into Jerusalem five' days previous; and (2) his overturn- ing the tables of money changers. Tllere were really tlvo trials, the One. ecclesiastical before Anllas and Cala- phlls; the otller civil, before Pilate. Herod Antipas, and finally, agaill be- fore Pilate. The Passion Play at Oh- erammorgau devotes nearly one half of the eighthours of its portrayal to his trial. Miscarriage of justice is common- as a matter of transitory experience. The thorlly path of jllstlce was never a- gain to be so thorny because Christ trod it. In all human history this is the nlatchless instance mocked and set at naught. Everything was irregular, but with pretence of regularity. Injustice nlust "save its face" or perish from the earth. Just law duly administered can- not harm the innocent; no more dare the wicked disregard the forms of law entirely. Mere assassination would not serve the turn of lligll priests and Pharisees, They must at least seem to act withill their rights. Pretence was of the very es- sence of their tasks.
