Severat Colonial and United States Mails have been re-| ceived during the past few days, the general news from which | will be found in our present No. We learn by the Nova Seotia Mail yesterday, that, at the meeting of the House of Assembly on the 26th instant, Mr. | Johnston's Government was defeated on the choice of a Speaker. The Ministry proposed Mr. Wade, member for Digby, to fill the Speaker's chair—the Opposition proposed Mr Stewart Campbel!,andhe waselected. There is no doubt that the career of the Johnston Administration is now at an end. — <> ea Tus editor of tle Protestant, of Satarday last, in alluding | to the tuneral obsequies of the late Bishop of Charlottetown, | and the remarks of the Is/ander and Examiner thereon, gives the | following s, ecimen of his talent for jocular writing: —‘* In an- | ** other part of the article, the writer speaks of holy water as, If the Editor of the! ** Islander, in which this statement has been published with-. ** that which puts demons to flight. ‘‘ out comment, really believes there is so much virtue in holy | ‘* water, we would ree wimend him to have some of it sprinkled | : ; : ‘about the Eraminer office, in order to put to flight the ‘ly- - ‘ing spirits’ which hover around that establishment,’’ | i Not being able to understand the wit of the thing. all we need say is, that there is one devil about the Examiner office | who could'nt be put to flight at the suggestion of all the Davy Lairds in Christendom—who takes care to use a good| deal of sprinkling every morning, and who would, no doubt, give the bluck puritanical editer the benefit of a liberal and necessary ublution, should he come within the precincts of our | office, though we cannot promise him thet the water will be | consecrated. —_——_- —_—-oe +. THE CHARLOTTETOWN ELECTION. Tus election for Charlottetown, caused by Mr. Palmer's | resignation of his seat in the House of Assemhly, took place | yesterday, (the 30th); and as the Political Alliance frown | Gown all opposition to their decrees from members of the | Conservative party, whether they beiong to the Alliance or | j ; | | mot—no one had courage enough to oppose Mr. Beer, who | confesses that he was the nominee of the sceret society ; and | who must now be regarded as their member. It was in con-| templation, @ week or two ago, to bring Mr. N. Rankin for- ward, aud he would have made a very good member; bit the Alliance was too powerful for him and his friends, and they had to succumb. Many conservatives profess to be annoyed and disgusted with tue arrogance of the Alliance, in usurping the eleetive franchise for the City and Royalty within their own narrow circle; but if they have not spirit enough openly to resist the usurpation, they deserve to suffer it. As for the Liberals they do not intend to contest this rotten borough so long as the majurity of the electors appear afraid to call their souls theirown. Even if they could have got a member of their own in the House, at the present time, it would not have much improved their position there; and it is far better to wait for a general election, when the Tories can be easily routed in # large majority of the country districts. The pub- lie are already sickened of our present rulers, and they want only the opportunity to tell them to make place for batter men. The election yesterday, we are informed, was a very dull affair. There was scarcely a sufficient number of people in and about the Court House to keep the Returning Officer and his Clerk from yawn ng over the int>resting proc -edings ; and vader !] ¢ discouraging circumstances the distinguished nominee of the Alliance deomed it best to reserve his oratory for the House of Assembly ‘O CORRESPONDENTS. We have still several communications on hand for which we cannot find room. Our correspondents must exercise a little patience with us, as we have to do with many of them occasionally, in reading their lengthy lucubrations. — A British officer writing from Teheran, Persia, to the Lon- don Times, remarks :—** A Cathartic Pill, manufactured by tn American Chemist, (Dr. J. C. Aver, of Lowell, Mass.) has cared the Shah of a Liver Complaint that threatened his life. This simple fact, as might be expected, renders the Americans immensely popular here, while we English are overlooked. Doubtless our own scholars made the discoveries which he employs, and thus itis in everything: we do the labor, then the mo sing Americans put their mark on it and take the reward. \)oct.
