Hospital ._._..- The annualmeeting of the trus- tees of the Prince County Hospital. was held on ‘ruesday evening in the Town Hall. Many interested citizens were present. The meeting was ad- dresed by the President, Mr. H. T. Holman, who presided. President's address follows: Ladies a Gentlemen,—- success is a Journey. not a destin- ation. I would ask you to give this sentence your consideration for it explains to quite an extent the dif- ficulties that are encountered in the operation of any successful un- dertaking. The Prince County Hos- pital- can very truthfully be called a. successful Institution but its suc- cess is undoubtedly a journey whose destination is lost in the clouds of uncertainty that ezshroud the path leading to the mountain top. As we look down into the valley and get a vision of out starting point we realize we have come a considerable distance on our journey. The path has been leading steadily upward and i! occasionally it has halted or strayed it seems to have been to gain a new foothold which has car- ried it to a further rise. There is something that I might almost call appaling in a realization of the fact that in carrying on the activities of an Institution such as this we can never. nor those who come after us can never. foldthelr hands and say the work is done and the Institution has arrived at its Journeys end. ‘There is no end for ltmustgo on rever and forever improving and expancflag. seizing upon the many new ideas of the medical fraternity, bringing them 'into every day use, usln! every means to make life a little more certain and disease less a terror than it has been. Although we cannot see the end yet our pres- ent duty is very clear. - To have the torch burning with a little brighter flame when we pass it on to those who come after us than when we received it, should be our aim and our hope. To add Our bit to the ad- t ncement and welfare of the’ In- stitution. V l I ‘ ' Let me tell you a little of the his- tory ofthe Prince county Hospital for it is gradually becoming old enough to have a history. Incor- porated in 1010 it started in a small way with doubt and uncertainty as - HARDWARE — lo"r:snfsss" I Brand Fox Netting Foxes are valuable, and in or- der to insure their proper pro- lcciion you should have the best therefore you should have “PEERLESS." the b051- English Fox Netting on the market. In 1915 the Hospitals‘ capa- city was over-taxed and the west wing was added and a small canvas- ing campaign wasinaugurated to raise the deficit of $3000.00 Steady progress was made and very scor- we again found our facilities insuffici- ezxt for the demands made upon them. In 1920 we made very ex- tensive alterations and additions bringing the Hospital to its present size. To accomplish this we had to call upon the generosity of the resi- dents of this county and I am proud to say they responded nobly. This was in 1920 and for 10 years we have carried on paying our way out of our earnings and calling only in a small way for outside help. We now want some $10,000.00 for paying the bal- ance due on the Nurses Home and making it possible to have a bonfire of the mortgage now covering it. to install a new electric elevator and other absolutely necessary equip- ment. We are serving this notice on you now so you will be prepared for u; when we call. The nurses home was not bought for the ben- efit of the nurses alone but the trustees were forced by stern neces- sity to provide more accommodation for patients and the only place available was the quarters on the third floor. This floor has been fitted up into private and seml- pri- vate rooms and has relieved the con- jestion in a very satisfactory man- ner. A decision had to be arrived at without delay and the trustees, al- though without the necessary mon- ey. felt they could rely upon the generosity of the rosidentsof the County to provide it. ‘.1’! outsider. our present property situated in tne| heart of the town a very valuable one that will continue to be enhanc- ed in value as the years go by. " The acquiring of this pro- perty has entailed the expenditure oi’ quite an amount over and above the purchase price. A complete out- fit of furniture had to be provided and an extensive fire escape had to be erected. This expenditure has been absorbed in our running ex- pence but in paying roi- it in this way our lmdowment fund became somewhat depleted. Our August campaign for funds will haveto pro- vide for this shortage and we feel sure that your response will make this assured forour demands upon you have been very few-indeed and . ~ I not pay, is an institution very wor- thy of yourjonerous consideration. The following is our financial re- cord for the year and our present standing. You will notice some strangers in our house of liabilities. They are unwelcome guests and we lwpo that within a very short time they will have taken their departure. The management also are awaiting the'time when the treasury is re- plenished, with a list of absolute necessities including an electric ele- vator and modern refrigerators; A perusal of our Assets will bring you a realization that we have grown into quite an Institution and an analysis of them makes us anticipate that we will soon be self sustaining.
