By Clifford McBride Late Opening For Hockey Season At S’side The Summerslde hockey season opens this evening with an ex- hibition game between the Sum- merside All-Stars and the Char- lottetown Abbies. This is possibly the latest date that our national sport has ever commenced in the history of the town. Once before this game was scheduled and ad- vertised but the weather interfer- ed and it had Io be cancelled. Hockey fans in Summerslde are hockey hungry and this game should see a large turnout as It will be the first time this season that most of them have seen the home team in action. The All-Stars are last year's provincial inter- mediate champions and it will be interesting to see how they com- pare with lust year's championship tc-nm. The Abbies are the team that ort- compctlng in the Central B League and are possibly the strongest unit that can be got to- gether tn Charlottetown. Managers Charlie Cohlll and Ivan Vaughn have been working hard to have n good sheet of Ice for the opening game and they will have everything in reallja for the starting whistle.—S. llictorias Shut A" mom‘ 1n tonight's Olty Hockey League encounter, the third place Saint Dunstanh University squad and the second place Prince of Wales Welshmen will clash at the Forum at 8:15. The game will be the first tor the S.D. U. boys in five weeks, the last being when they met the Welshmen on December ‘ith to trounce them by a score of 12-3. It is hard to say, however, just how the Saints will shape up af- ter their long layofl and with ohe Welshmen having improved their style of play steadily since that time, tonight's tussle should be a wide open, fast skating encounter. Certainly it is not expected to be raw htful fragrance. New York Giants Fined CINCINNATI, Jan. 12 — (AP) - Baseball Commissioner A. B. Chandler hung fines on Leo Durocher, Freddie Fitnsimmons and the New York National League baseball club today for violating the tampering rule. He warned that more severe penalties will be inflicted ii’ anyone does it again. Duromer, manager of the Giants. and Fitzsimmons, last year a Boston Braves’ coach. were fined $500 each for negotiating a 1949 contract while Freddie still was employed by the Beantown Club. Fltzsimmons also was suspended from March 1 to April 1. The New York club was fined $2,000. ' The rules say a. player or coach must have the written consent of his club before he may negotiate with another outfit. Chandler said that "Except for the fact that Frederick Fitz- simmons has had long and honor- nhlc service In baseball, the Com- missioner would deprive the New York club of his services for the 1049 season." Baseball's head man said he wants the Giants‘ management to certify that the fines of‘ Durodier and fltzslmmons are paid solely out of their own funds and that hereafter."
