The independence of thought and the freedom of inquiry characteristic of the University guarantee that the assurpticns underlying society, including those umbrlying the University, are continually challenged and renewed. Although the pursuit of truth in all its forms and the formation of the free person have always been the espoused ends of the University, each Univer- sity is itself a product of its own tine and place.
