SEE OMAP RBs tn ite EXAMINER NOVEMBER 27, 1877. —— THe DAILy -— THE ELECTION IN QUEBEC EAST. — LAURIER will win to-morrow and his Ministry can help him to win. The following from an Ottawa dispatch will give idea of the means the Minis- if McKenzie our readers some terialists are adop.ing to secure his return: ‘* 4 gentleman who arrived from Quebec to-day states thet if Mr. Laurier, as a Minis ter, was on trial, with no extraneous assist- ance, he would not poll 800 votes in (Juebec East, and that it is only the expenditure of an immense sum ean secure his return, He states that prominent Miuisteriaiists say they are bound to elect Laurier if it costs $50,000, as defeat would mean the total annihilation of the Government party im the Provinee. He fur- ther says the argument is that no protest can be entered in time for trial before the House meets, and that no decision could be arrived at before the death of Parliament would nullity legal proceedings, and thus corruption 18 looked upon as a fair and honest policy 80 long as it cannot be diseovered or ventilated in a court of law.” Reports, however, say that Mr. Tourangeau will be elected, notwithstanding the coercion and bribery of the Ministerial party, that pub lic sentiment is in his favor, and that when will be found that the ballot is counted it hundreds who signed M. Laurier’s requisition, being ignorant of the issues that have since arisen, will vote for the Opposition candidate. It is humiliating to the indeed be to tind it dishorable and well remarked that it must Governmen: necessary to resort to most corrupt tactics to elect a Minister in place of a private member who was returned by acclama- tion in 1874. FISHERY COMMISSIONERS AWARD. THE JupGine by the tone of its press, the United States will pay the five and a millions awarded by the Fishery Commissioners. After all the protestations and denunciations of . McKenzie, Blake and fellows, the fisheries of Canada were not quite “given away by Sir John McDon- ald.” The amount to be received for them is, however, little enough. —_————___-. <a MARITIME UNION. Tue Toronto Globe is still strong in its ad- vocaey of Maritime Union. In its latest issue it says:— ‘‘The impertance to the whole Dominion, as well as to the Provinces themselves, of such a movement successfully carried through could scarcely be overrated. It would give in- creased weight to the Provinces, would effect a great saving in expenditure, and make a large amount of local talent available for higher purposes than those by which it is at present absorbed. In every point of view the waole Dominion has good reason to wish the move- ment success.” The editor of the Patriot will, we have no doubt, soon wheel into line. +. me -o e lO” THE BRELIVEAU ALBERTITE AND\ AND OIL COMPANY, Cuz ‘* Prospectus’’ issued by this com- pany is, we notico, heartily endorsed by the leading Geologists of the Dominion. The mixes are situate in Westmoreland. N. SERVICES AND SERMONS ON SUNDAY. SECOND METHODIST CHURCH. Temperance. — The evenimg service was held with the object of forwarding the Tem- perance movement. The singing of the choir was exceptionally good ; and the prayers were specially for strength to resist temptation to drunkenness. The Rev. Mr. Steele read and expounded the thirty-fifth chapter of Jere- miah, in which the obedience of the Recha- bites to the command of their father to “‘ drink no wine” receives special commendation, He delivered a short, forcible and practical acl- the text, mocker ; strong drink is raging, and whosoever is de- dress from ‘“‘Wine is a ceived thereby is not wise.” At the conclu- siov of his address and the exercises immedi- ately following, Mr. invited other gentlemen in the audience to speak upon the Steele topic and the invitation was responded to by James W. McKechnie (President of the Char- lottetown Reform Club), John Dorsey (of the iirm of Dorsey & Jost), George E. Full and Artemas Sims. Mr. Steele was assisted in the services hy the Rev. Srr,—An ** Ex-Crown Law Officer” has hit a decided blot in our criminal procedure, or rather non-procedure. It is a matter of common observation at the Bar that a prisoner has everything to gain and notking to lese by breaking jail. At present the Sheriff of King’s County is engaged in pursuing an escaped convict. Pro- clamations and notices give information as to his appearance, and place the public upon the alert ; and probably he will be recaptured, But the only result to him will be that he will have shortened his term of tnprisonment, so that even if caught he will be a gainer. It is well for him that his crime was not com- mitted when our present worthy Governor Sir Robert Hodgson was Attorney General, for at the very next term after his capture he would have been indicted for his offence, The days when men did their duty have gone, but I hope not forever, Yours truly, oS JHANT’S SCHEME CRITICIS 2D, AME To the Edilok of the Daily Examiner : Sin,—I haye often thought that the ad« vocates ae ree Trade’ need not advance argumeyts to support their views; for tho adduced by Protectionists are yéually suicidal. | The letter of A Merchant in to-day’s EXAMINER is acase in point. Some litile while ago you allowed me in your columns to point out the injustice of the tax upon Commercia! Traveliers, which is a form of protection; and now A Merchani—while objecting to this particular tax—proposes another, which would be protection with a vengence. It is noless then that the City Council should assume the powers of the Dominion Parliament, and levy “a tax on goods consigned tobe sold _ by auc- tion! ! In other words, establish a special customs duty of our »wn in this city, and so protect the ordinary merchant. If this is done, our shoemaker’s should demand that a tax be levied on all shoes brought from elsewhere into Charlottetown, Tail- or’s, Cabinet maker’s &c., will make the same demand. 3ut Charlottetown having done this, every other city should do the same; every country district should follow suit ; and then when nobody could buy anything except what was made and produced in his own im- mediate neighborhood, and all eommerce was destroyed, we should all be protected, and therefore all be rich, prosperous and happy. if ‘“‘A Merchant” was acquainted with the constitution of his country, he would know that such a city bye-law would be wholly un- constitutional, and that such a tax as he pro- poses could never be levied ; but his letter may be a very useful one, if it shows the reductio ad absurdum to which protectionist principles, logically followed out, lead. : FREE TRADER.
