Mr. Wright was somewhat late, through un- controllable circumstances, in getting his exhibit here. ensiadtininiien Oyster Fisuinc.—At Bay der vin Basin, according toa New Brunswick exchange, there are at present nine schooners of over 100 tons each buying oysters from over 300 Caraquet fishing boats that are engaged in the oyster fishery in that place. Four of the schooners are from P. E. 1, twofrom N. S., and three from Quebec. They pay spot cash for the bivalves almost as soon as theyfare out of the water. The Toronto Irish-Canadian, one of Mowatt's most blatant supporters in the recent election campaign, has come out squarely for the annexation of Canada to the United States. The revenue to Sept. 30th aggregated $9,828,000, and the expenditure $5,972,- 000, showing a surplus of $3,856,000, a half a million more than for the same period last year. The net debt of Canada has decreased during September $18,700,000. The regulations for the St. Leonard’s and Van Buren ferry are gazetted. Capt. Hector McKenzie has been gazett- ed commander of the Critic, of the fisheries protection service. News from Halifax. Hairrax, Oct. 3. The nautical fair, which has been a pro- nounced success, closed to-night. Twenty thousand visitors have patronized it during the week, and the gate receipts are fifty per cent. more than the world’s fair of two years ago, The total net receipts from the gate and booths aggregate nearly four thou- sand dollars. William Proctor, manufacturer of boots and shoes, North Sydney, has assigned. His liabilities are said to be heavy. The late Thomas Bayne left no will, and his three sons will inherit everything. Birchall says that when he heard His Lordship’s charge, the last ray of hope van- ished and he was resigned to his fate. He thinks the judge was too severe in his comments, still he does not complain. Birchall, however, was sorely dissapointed with the evidence for the defence.
