The widow of Charles II., ex-Grand Duke of Parma, aged 76, is dead. She was « daughter of the late Victor Em- manuel I., King of Sardinia. Americans manage to invent odd ex pre sions. Ameriean lady was at a London ball. Dancing heated her. ‘I feel a little dewy.’ she said to her partner, as she wiped the perspiration from her brows. ‘Mr. Talmage,’ according to the Lon} den correspondent of the Liverpool Couricr, ‘is to the religious world what Mile Sarah Bernhardt is to the fashion- able society.’ and has been delivering an address at Exeter Hall, a real live Lord, Lord Kintore, presiding. Count Shouvaloff, the Russian ams bassador to England, has been made the dupe of a clever swindler, who passing himself off as a member ofa German Foreign Embassy, succeeded, on the basis of important information as to the forgery of Russian rouble notes, in inducing him to part with £500- In a trial for breach of promise before a London jufy, the fair plaintiff testi- fied that the unfair defendant, offering her marriage, took his diamond ring off and put it on her finger and soon afterwards gave her a ‘ proper engaged torquoise ring.’ That settled the mat- ter. She straightway got $200 dama- ver. H His Mxcellency the Governor General had decided to distribute medals given by him to the Dominion as follows :— The exhibitor who receives the greatest number of first prizes for cattle, a gold medal. To the exhibitor who receives the greatest number of prizes for horses, a silver medal. ‘To the exhibi- tor who receives the greatest number of first prizes for sheep, a bronze medal. A colored jury to try a capital offence has at last been empannelled in Vir- ginia. The man tried is colored, and he did pot like that the jury should be composed of colored men. ‘The verdict was, gulty of murder in the second degree---and he gets eighteen years of practical penitential life. At the first trial the gallows was given him—or he was given to the gallows—but he escaped the triple tree. Mrs. Rhinehurt and daughter, Miss Horiker, were drowned in the Sangamon River, Illinois, on Tuesday last. The young lady was to have been married on Monday, but her affianced failed to ap- pear and in desperation she started for the river, followed by her mother. She plunged in and as her mother was at- tempting to save her both were drowned. Others of tie bridal party narrowly escaped the same fate. Mr. Nanpary was obliged to send his audience away from the Halifax Theatre on Monday night, without giving a per— formance, on account of the absence of Mr. W. F. Burroughs. He claims that Mr. Burroughs refused to go on the stage because he (N.) would not allow B. to dispose cf tickets tor his own benefit as he pleased. Burroughs explains in the papers that Nannary is behind in paying his company, and that he owes him (B.) $300 to $400, and slight prospects of getting it; that he (B.)issued 400 of his own tickets for his benefit (as customary) which N. refused to recognize and for- bade the sale of ; that he (B.) then de- manded $50 from N. on account before he would appear on the stage again ; that N. would not pay; and hence B.'s ub- sence on Monday night. _ — i a East African Slave Trade. A Bill has been introduced in the Im- perial Parliament, by Mr. Bourke, for ex- tending the scope of the East African Slave Trade Courts Act of 1873 so as to include any Treaty made by Her Majesty with the Government in Egypt in relation to the slave trade. Under this Act the East African Courts have jurisdiction over British vessels that have been seized by one of Her Majesty’s ships on suspicion of being engaged in or fitted out for the slave trade. Mr. Bourke proposes that this jurisdiction shall extend to British vessels which in pur- suance of any East African slave trade treaty, have been seized on this suspicion and broug!it for trial by the commander or vtticer of any ship belonging to the foreign State with which the treaty has been made, i Liver is King. The liver is the imperial organ of the whole human system, as it controls the life, health and happiness of man. When it is disturbed in its proper action, all kinds of ailments are the natural result. The di- gestion of food, the movements of the heart and blood, the action of the brain and ner- vous system, are all immediately connected with the workings of the liver. It has been sueceasfully proved that Green’s August Flower is unequalled in curing all persons afflicted with dyspepsia or liver complaint, and all the numerous symptoms that result from an unhealthy condition of the liver and stomach. Harvie, Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— Dear Str—It is now two years since your ‘Constitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced to me. I have waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be “too good to be true.” 1 was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit up in the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles, Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts me to send you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon may see proper Yours truly, W. TINDALL, Methodist Minister. Port Elgin, Ont., Aug. 24, 1878. Ask for Littlefield’s Constitutional Catarrh Remedy and take no other, T. J. B. Harvie, Dominion Agent, Brock- ville, Ont.
