I had known him intimately for 15 years and in that time the clear-cut lines of his large, impulsive nature had become so familiar to me that I was as well able to interpret every phase of his varied humors as was be himself. “T called to see Miss Mofford this af- ternoon,’’ he said, morosely, ‘‘and urged ber to hurry up our wedding day, but she parried all my arguments with the same threadbare excuse that has been dinned into my ears for the last six months: ‘Walt till my book is finished.’ Confound novels, anyway. Especially those that are written by women. “She expects to have it in the hands of the publishers in two weeks’ time and insists that, as it is incompatible with her views for a woman destitute of both Dame and fortune to marry a man in my station. the wedding must be post- — until at least a fair degree of fame as been acquired through her work, which she feels confident is bound to be @ success. Do you know?’’ he added, bitterly, ‘‘I think it ome of the most pernicious results of our boasted modern- day liberty that young women whose minds should retafh their natural fresh- ness and innocence should be contamin- ated by investigating all sorts of scand- alous proceedings and the impulses that would lead a person to act thus and so just for the sake of writing a book that shall be true to lifa. As pearly as I can remem- ber this is the way she put it to me:— ** *T place great value,’ she said, ‘upon your knowledge of human nature, and in order that I may woek out a consist- ent ending for my story I want your suggestions and advice. Follow me close- ly, that you may lose no detail of what I have already written and may be able to judge fairly. Once upon a time there was a girl-—of course, There could have been no novel without her. She was not @ very pretty girl, and there was nothing in all her girlhood days that bore the faintest trace of prettiness. She was brought up in poverty; not the abject poverty of the tenement and the street, but a constant cringing strife for enough to eat and to wear, that is called re- spectable poverty but which is very nearly as hard to endure as the more in- ferior grade, “*She was 19 when she learned to love. It was a very short lesson and she mastered it easily. All her life she had been lonely and longing for some one to confide in and cling to and she ac- cepted him unquestioningly as her pro- tector and guide. do not wish to do him an injustice. He was not a thor- oughly bad man; moreover, I do not de- sire to excuse her or detract one iota from the magnitude of her crime. He did not deceive her. He told her the day before they were to be married that he had a wife Mvying. And she—well, per- haps she ought not to have done it and of course neither an absolutely good Woman nora thoroughly unprincipled, selfish woman would have done it. But she was only an everyday, erring mortal and—she married him anyway. Do not start so. She is only an imaginary hero- ine. Flesh-and-blood creations are not gullty of such acts of indiscretion. *“* ‘At the end of a year the very thing which he had always assured her would be an impossibility became an assured fact. He returned to his first love. It did not kill her. She schooled herself to look upon her punishment as the inevitable result of her transgression and, realizing that her love dream was ended, she turned once more to the innate sources of power and ability which, with a little cultivation, would render her independ- ent of scoffing relatives and friends and faithless husband. While her baby lived there was still some near and dear object for her to care for, but with the death of the little one she left the place that had been the scene of, het deepest misery and greatest joy and began life again in a far away place. A new name was chosen, new work wax commenced and the dead past buried its dead com pietely. | “* *Three years of loneliness, privation pand toil passed away, and then she ; found herself wooed by another man. But I am wearying you and must hasten on. She did not love this man in the full sense of the word, for she was a woman whose former vows of affection Were not meant for time alone, but she knew that she could be very happy with him and could make him happy in re- turn, so one day, after many refusals, she rewarded his importunity by promis- {ng to marry him. I have carried my characters up to this pointand now what I wish to - at is this: I hare portrayed this second suitor as being good, hontst and kind. He knew nothing of the woman’s past; indeed, he did not suspect that she had one, and I want to know if it would be an inartistio ending for her to marry him without undeceiving him?’ "" ‘So you see, my friend,’’ continued Jarvis, with an attempt to shake off his fit of melancholia, “‘I am going to be an author, after all, ina roundabout way. When ‘our’ book comes out you shall have the first copy. But really you can’t wonder that it puts me out of sorts, now can you, to have my sweetheart mixed up !n such an affair, even though it be in the most imnocent way?’’ And I, pondering deeply over what I had just heard, les Jarvis out of the front door without answering him. Jarvis left town the next day and it _ six months later when I next met m. *“*I read your book,’’ I said, jestingly, when our first greetings were over, ‘‘and was greatly fascinated with it. You and your collaborator deserve great credit, It is undoubtedly the book of the season. I suppose the wedding will come off soon now !"’ Jarvis’s pale, thin face seemed to grow ae thinner and his hands trem- ied nervously. “He,’* said he, oF guess not.”’ “Why not!’ I ejaculated, in uncon- trollable surprise, “Becasee,"’ he returned, ‘Miss ae was the heroine of her own She Was Not So Lucky. “I found a good bargain i shoes to-day,’ said Jorkins, me he picked everything on the supper table “You have had better luck than I bad, retorted his wife.—Detroit ore Build Up. Scenes in Constantinople During the Thrive Days Massacre of Armenians. New York, Oct 18.—Madjhi Raheian, a Christian Turk, was one of the passengers on board the Lagascogne, which arrived today. He comes to this country on @ business trip. Through an interpreter he told of the massacres of Armenians. He was at Constantinople during the three day’s massacre in August last. During the three days three thousand Armenians, he says, were slaughtered throughout the empire. Waggons filled with bodies were constantly passing through the streets of Constantinople, and none of the bodies were buried, but cart-load after cart-load were dumped into the sea. The s ght was a sickening one, and what added to its hor- ror was the fact that in these wagons wee piled the dead and the dying, wud the feeble cries of the wounded for release could be heard coming from the carts, but the appeals were utterly unheeded. Whether Killed or wounded they were ti rown into the sea. Mr. Rahsian said he saw Turkish sold iers walking along the streets with revoly- ers in their bands while other Tarks wouk be carrying clubs. The Jews of the city would poimt out the Armenians and then the soldiers would shoot or clubs would be used. The Jews would alo, according to Mr Rahsian, point out a certain house, declar- ing that it was inhabited by Armenians, whereupon the soldiers would break inte the house and kill everyone, men, women and children. The Armenians in many instances had sought refuge on roofs of houses, but the Turks would pursue them and compel them to jump off into the street and thus be killed or maimed. Until now the Europeans have not been killed, but they are leaving Constantinople, fearing that they may be attacked. It is the general feeling in Constantinople | that the European powers should interfere as soon as possible, because the Armenians are not yet conquered, and are contemplat- ing reyolt to avenge their massacred breth- ren. eae The Cornell University campus is to have a new gateway at its enterance, given by the Hon. Andrew D. Whiteof the United States Venezulan Commission. The gateway, which it is ertimated will cost $3,000, is desigoed by Architect W. H. Miller, of Ithaca. It isto be bailt of alternate courses of Ohio sandstone and limestone. The roadway opening, seven- teen feet in width, runs between piers twenty five feet high, and is flanked by footway openings seven feet in width. Tablets let into the centres of the wing walls are inscribed reapectively “So enter that daily thou mayest become more learned and more thoughtful; so depart that daily thou mayest become more useful to thy country aud to mankind,” this being the trans- lation of th: inscription on an old Italian gateway; and “The Lord bless thy gving out and thy coming in from this time fourth forevermore.” It Saved Our Child. “My little daughter, three and a half year old, suffered three years with Eczema. There is a very general impression in the minds of smokers that tho meer- schanm part of the pipe, which they treasure so carefully and take so much pride and satisfaction in ‘‘coloring,’’ is compressed sea foam. Such, however, is not the case. The German word meer- schaum meansin English foam of the sea, but its formation has nothing to do with the sea. It is o kind of clay, comes out of mines like coal, and is found only in Turkey. The artist who carves meerschaum is required to pass through as severe a school of apprenticeship, last- ing from three to ten years, as though the work were in marble. A Sure Cure for Dumbness.
