JUNE16 1899. _ _ vacant Judgcship for Queen’s County in respect to which the majority of the people have made up their minds. One of these is that the vacancy ought to be prpmptiy filled. Business is interfered with, many are incon- venienced and the course of justiceis delayed by keeping the position va- cant. The other point in regard to which there is a strong consensus .af public opinion is that the Queen's County Court being vacant it ought to be Elled by a direct appointment, and not in any round-about or indirect fashion. The claims and fitness of an applicant for the vacant position .1 should be fairly weighed, but such _considerations as finding a better place for a present County Judge, or creat- ing a vacancy to which an applicant might be appointed who would not be' appointed to the vacant Judgeship in Queens,.ought to be altogether ex- cldded. _ There is a vacancy in Queen’s County. There is nc vacancy in King’s County, nor is there any necessity for making a vacancy there except to give the present Judge a position that would suit him _better and a larger salary than be now enjoys and to pro- vide a place for Mr.Blanchard. While the many friends of Judge Warbur- ton wrufibe glad tosee him made Judge of Queen’s County, no :one will claim that the ends of justice or any legitimate public object or pur- pose would be better served by such a "deal," and all must feel that if car- ried out it would to some extent com- prumisethe dignity of the “judicial P°~i¢i°“¢.%5f°°¢4= 1 - _ we"have o1u',dwir.fI>°fti1=s_ If ,ws dengue' it -mia be im. ,- tho government of the day, we be- lieve that Attorney General' Mc- D°'"‘ld mud’ _the p_opula_r taste exactly: It must be proved, we would certainly make an attempt, but we’ believe* that it hits Hr McDonald is alawyer of four- ’5l.i°d to ba a rec ‘ D” ‘ . _ . As is well known,Tm: GUARDIAN has had occasion to oppose one or more of- the p» lllic measures which the At- torney General has proposed and carried through the Legislature, and we .ire not therefore moved by any consider afions of personal favor to- ward him. But we think the public interest will be best served, under the circumstances, by his appointment. Further delay would be an indication of weakness on the part of the gov- ernment, and we can assure Sir Louis Davies that the proposed deal above advarted to ~is entirely repugnant to the best sentiment of Prince Edward Island.
