It isnot Surprising that the farmer has preferred to seil his produce for what he can get a middie man to, rather than himselt ship to ihe British market, for he has been completely at the mercy of the receiver in the Old Countty. How could the shipper know who was to be trusted and who was not ? If the English broker claim- ed that the goods were damaged, or notin accordance with the contr ict, how could the shipper in Canada fight against him? And there was no means of checking the charges that were made in accounts of sale. The Eng- lish broker has been in the habit of adding to his commission extra charges which on this side of the water are unknown, such as cooperage, cata- loguing, selecting, grading and etceter- as, so thatthe shipper never really knew what amount world be deducted from the proceeds of his shipments. It is gratifying to learn that at Jast tbese difficulties have been grappled with with in a business manner, with- out altempting to depart, as others ! have done, from the established chan- nels of trade. We have before us the literature of the Europaan Exporters’ Association of Toronto, Limited, an incorporated company with an author- ized capital of $100,000, organized for the protection of Camadian shippers. The association has officesin Toronto, Montreal and London, England, and an extensive systen of agents at™Canadia . and British port. - The association undertakes, on b:- halt of Canadian exporters, to arrang: freight contracts, to attend to the stow- age and prompt transport?tion, of ship- ments and to investigate any claims that may be made by receivers, and report. Qaly one receiver is selected at each pert tor each kind of produce. The best man is chesen, and the bes possible terms are made with him.
