Dean Fatner,—As it aa already known to you, the Diamond Jubilee ef Mer ‘ Gracious Majesty will be universally cele- brated througbout gthe length‘and breadih of the British Empire on the 22ad_ inst. We are all aware that the sixty years’ pub- lie life of our Sovereign, the Queen, bas been marked by many notable changes to- wards enhaucing the prosperity of the sutj-cts of her vast reilm. Our own Canadian people have spared to v0 smal] extent In the b.essings of ber prosperous reign, 80 that under tne toatering hand of her government great pr-greas ha been this fair Dominion of Canada. lustead of being a few stinted colonies, which at the commencement of her reign were administered ia a most arbitrary and not untrequeautly in A very unjast manner, our couviry bas developed into a very | Strong, energetic and progressive confedera- | tien, bav ms a just and equitable con-titu- , on whereby liberty and law are so blend- ed as to aflord our people an eflicient pro- tection for life, property and conscience. Moreover, ine private life of our Gracious Sovereign has not been lesa noted for do- | mestic virtue than has ber public lite been tor beneficent progress. It is only just and natural that the state should celebrate this jnteresting event with civic festivities, aud as loyal subjects , of Her Maj+sty we should all be happy to co-operate for such lawful and praise- worthy purposes. But, moreover, as Catholics we should not be unmindful of our duty to give praixe and tbanks io Aimignty God, our Supreme Ruler, for al] the blessings granted to us and '0 al] the people of the Eupire’ during the re go of our Gracions Sovereign, and to in: 0<e our Heavenly Father that He biess ourfQueen, and bestow vpor her not only such assist- ance as centributes to the material pros- perity of Her subject=, but al-o ani par- ticularly His Divine graces tbrovgh which alone can be obtained the supreme happi- ness of eternal lite. Wherefore, we odain that on Sanday, the 20th inst., at every Mass ofte:el in the diocese, the pastors mek: suitabie refe.- ence to the event of the Diamond Jubilee, and that they ask their respective congre- gations to pray to Almighty God for the spiritual and temporal welfare of our Queen. and, wherever it is possisle, we enjoin that, either after Muse or after the Bene— diction of the Blessed Sacrament, a solemn “Te Deum” be sung, followed by the pray- er “Domine Saivem f.c Reg nam,” &. Wishing you and your flock the choices bless.ngs of Heaven, I remain, dear Kev, Paver, yours faithtully in the Sacred Heart, * td. C. The artic’es sbown are all the work of the pupils at~ tending the convent schools, and ile dis play is in the highest degree creditable to the good sisters who impart instruction in the various branches as well as to the young ladies whore work peaks louder than words with respect to the thoroug)h- ness Of the instruction they have received. The display this year is the largest that bas ever been made by the iastitution, and connoiseurs in (hat sort of thing say that the qualitv throughout is also better than at the exhibits of former years. Those who have been privileged to witness the displays of past years will therefore readily appreciate the excellence of the showing made this year. The display of paintinzs a d drawings includes 32 subjects, all of which are of a high order of excellence. The work of the more advanced puptls is, of cc ase, the most admired, bat the efforts of the jacior pupils are exceeding!y creditable. There are &O many young ladies deserving of praise for this work that it would be unfa'r to single out any for special mention, and we have not space for all tLe names, There is also a larga exhibit of plain and art'-tic sewing, which the ladies. pro+ bounce excellent in every respect. The ariicles shown comprise almost everything u-efu! and oreamental about a house, The draws work in tray cloths, toilet sete, picture draperies, etc., is especially admirable. Indeed, the colors in tuedra- peries blend as artistically as if they were from a brush. Tbis work was performed avy Misses Ene'’e Larue, Alvina Miller, Annie Gorman and Bernadetie Gillie. Two hand-painted five o’ciock tea ‘seta a-ealso on exhibition. The work of burning and decorating the china was all done in the convent, and it hax been most skilfully performed. One of the teta id the | work of Miss E. Larue, and the other the work of Mise A. Miller. Tere are aiso a number of fancy tahl-, | fire screens, cushions, panels and other | articles which have esca.ed our memory, Theae all indicate excellent taste and much ability.
