Creo English Opinion. : Lonpon, March 24. Though the reports of the Commons de- bate on Sir Richard Cartwright’s reciprocity motion are meagre, comments: made here generally agree that the Canadian decision against the motion blocks the United States proposal to obtain exclusive commercial privileges on her northern frontier, just as the new __ treaty between England and Mexico excludes for ten years the chance of such privileges on the southern. It is difficult to see what Cauada or Mexico would gain politically or commercially by closer relations with their vast neighbor than with the Old World, while it is clear that both would ‘sacrifice much worth preserving. fire in the Citadel. Hatirax, March 25. . The main barracks in the Citadel were partly destroyed by fire last night. The fire originated from a defective fue. Str, —As spring is so early I expect the ladies of Charlottetown will soon be on the move collecting subscriptions for the sup- port of _the ornamentation of the grounds surrounding the public buildings on Queen Square, but I am strongly of opinion that no more money should be expended for such a laudable purpose until the Domin- ionand Provincial Governments erect a decent fence around the grounds enclosing their buildings.
