M, Hold successful llarity Concert In Irishtown -On Friday evening, November 29th, a. variety concert sponsored by Irishtown Women's Institute, in the Community Hall, was staged before a capacity audience, "and each number on the program was well received and heartily ap- plaudid. Mr. Leigh Payntsr was the capable master of ceremonies. Guests artists included Messrs. Roland Sheen and Ralph Emery of Summei-side, appearing for the first time in this hall, and the singing and dance numbers put on by these noted entertainers almost brought down the roof in delight- ed applause. In tribute to the nearly new hall Mr. Emery sang as a solo, "Bless This House". Iushtowns good neighbors, Long Rn .r and Spring Valley also con- tributed several excellent numbers, in monologues by Clair MacLeod and Mrs. William J. Profitt and vocal and piano solos by Irwin Brown. Clair and Irwin, although still youthful, are already in de- mand as entertainers, and on this occasion, as usual did not disap- point the audience. Mrs. Profltt, also of Long River, is always pop- ular here, and this time was bet- ter than ever, in her role of con- soler of the sick. While Mr. Paul Gallant's step dancing elicited a hearty round of applause, the sweet notes of his accordion held even greater appeal for many of his listeners. Also from Spring Valley were Charlie Cole with his guitar, who is, in- variably greeted with cheers, and Alfred Brennan. not so wellltnown here, but if audience response is any indication, likely to be better known as Charlie's partner in duet. Local talent too was well repre- sented in Mr. and Mrs. Willard Brown and other instrumentalists who set the pace for a happy eve- hing; in songsters, Mary Campbell, who always gets a big hand, Thel- ina and Clifford MacLeod, in duet. a popular sister-brother team, and littlest but not least, their two small sisters, Leita and Lois Mac- Leod. whose singing again charm- ed the audience, and in pianist Beryl MacLcod, whose pleasing platform poise and well rendered solos were very acceptable. "A dancing man from Seattle", proved to be mechanical, but nev- rrtheless caused gales of merri- merit. Two dialogues were also staged by local players and brought to light some considerable unsuspect- ed comedian talent. The dialogue. "Seeing Maw Off," starred Mrs. Clayton Stavert as "Maw", all dressed up to go to Shediac to see her sister. She is accompanied to the realistic ticket office, where the scene takes place, by her husband (James Simmonsv, titiughlcr (Lois Stavert.) and son tCarl Campbell). After she has bought her ticket from the ticket agent Iclayion Staveri). folks (Mrs. Harold MacLeod, Blanche MacLeod, Clifford Mac- Lcodl kccrp dropping into the waiting i'oom and telling doleful tales of families left to shift for themselves while the mother went away visiting. Finally after con- slderable comedy from the view- point. of the audience, Maw is convinced by the gossips that Paw is in grave danger of falling in love with the hired girl, and de- cides to stay home after all. "Waiting for the Doctor" had the audience next thing to rolling in the aisles, With Mrs. George Mat:Leod as the attractive nurse :I('K4fT':."E";'it2:0!1-1Iz':.I(?llLEM!KI281b&IlIllII'(i(I(l(IIlil?lIi!IIII(ItlllI(I(IIII' in Charge in the Waiting room.
