Sin,--In Saturday's Patriot, Messrs. Auld Bros., in a letter evidently intended for political effect, endeavors tu show that out of a total export of $309,000 woith of eggs from P. E Island, the loss to the province under the operatin cf the Me- Kinley tariff would amount to more than half of the total export, or $160,000. There is no one better aware of the fallacy of their calculations than Auld Beos. themselves, They are not unacquainted with the faet that the passage of the MeKinley Bill was followed by prompt advances in the price of all dutiable products, and that notwith- standing the annually increasing receipts from the Western States, eggs veached a higher price in Boston in December, 1890, than for several years priot to the passage of that Act— showing conclusively that the consumer has paid the greatest part, if not the whole duty. Auld Bros. have paid 20 cents per dcz for eggs since the imposition of the Scents duty—as high a price, prob- ably, as they have given for eggs for several years. Alter vesting the English market by actual] shipment, they admit that prices in London sre better than in Boston or New York, which effectua'iy sets aside the first part of their contention that the duty would prove a loss to the Province—unless, per- chance, their love for the Americans is so stroug that they are willing to ship to the States at a loss rather than take advantage of better markets, I could go into this egg question much more largely, but knowing the searcity of your space, I write thus brieily, L.
