CAPEL MEETS A RABBI, A UNIVER SALIST AND AN INFIDEL — DEFINING (OSITION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Mer. Cay with bis erimson cloak shoulders, delivered al Nineteenth Cen tury Club at the h of Mr. Court- landt, Palmer, in Gramercy Park, New York, Tuesday Ilis subject was “The Catholic Chureh,” and he had been invited to come and tell the club what the Catholie Church believes, and thrown over his tress before the Us< evening. then to be attacked and reply again, | after the true manner ofthe modern eympo.umMm He stated the position of the Cath Church interms which] mav be condensed 4s to!lows :— The Catholic Church maintains that man is endowed with intellect to know truth. with will to do good. He is with reason which, among pitted other capabilities and Dy Its own power | ‘ . and light, ean know of the existence of (red. of the immortality ofl man’s seu and of man’s responsible dependence on God Bat the churc h holds that there is another body of truth called revela- tion, giving still more extensive know-| ledge concering God and man. The Church in speaking of God, manifested by reason and by revelation is speaking of a ecife sisting personal | being distiuet really and essentially from the world, infinite in inteiligence | and will and io all perfections, this personal God creating all men to be saved. desiriog tho salvation of all, and rench of all the putting within the nece:s ry help tor such salvation The Church holds that between rea- | son and rev elation there can pever be any real discrepancy, since the same | God who gave the one gave the other. Here it is rm portant to gulf separating the facts in nature from the advanced by meo. The dimness of man’s knowledge | about his Creator, the weakness of | man’s mora! vature, the responsibility of man to God, and the goodness and justice of man’s Maker not only ren- dered revelation possible, but also neces- sary; und the Catholic Chureh holds that, revelation being made, there is the need of an authorative teacher and guardian of it, so that ia all times, for all persons, and under all circumstances, the individual may know the teaching of God. This implies infalliable or divine authority, exercised though it may be through weak, sinful, falliable agents. Tbe commission, not the individual, is to be looked at. Reason has the right to examine the credentials of such com- mission, but, being convinced the com- mission is genuine and has emana‘ed from God, who cannot deceive or be deceived, reason has but one duty, to accept the message, though it may be beyoad tire ken of intellect. Such divine and therefore ivfaliable authority was given tothe organie body called into existance by Christ, and which received on Pentecost Sunday, as its perpetual principal of life, the Holy Ghost, From that day torward a humas divine organism existed on earth, easily discevered by the Rock Peter on which it was formed, and by the marks of unity, apostolicity, catholicity, and lidliness, whieh are of the essence of its being and purpose... This is the Church of Christ, the pillar and ground of trath. Ths Rev. Dr. Pallma», Universalist, was then introduced asa defender of Protestantism. He said that all that had been urged by Monsignor Capel, aftera thonsand years of universal rale, had resulted in a reaction which made Protestantism a necessity Modern civilization was the outcome of Protest- antism. It was yet too early for a per- fect creed, but we can know already that this is God’s world, and not the devil's, and this should suffice us, Rabbie Gottheil said that once before he had fallen in witha Romish priest, scientific theories with whom, of courae, he had a re- ligious discussion. The priest said: “Tf you are right, we are wrong.” “Tam sorry to say,” added the rabbi, “that he left no standing place for Pro- testantism.”’ “Absolute and perfect truth,” continu- ed the rabbie, *‘is found on'‘no particular side [Applause.] Every religion which is given by God, and which has mortality for its basis, reflects one or the other side of the universal truth. The Quakers, I think, approach more nearly to the ideal of the Founder of their faith.” Unitarianism he defined as “modern culture with a slight flavour of Christ- ianity.” lle considered Methodism to be organization as farasit was consis- tant with individualism.
