The Panther Prints January 30, 1996 News/Features UPEI's New Vice President by Yvonne MacKean UPEI now has a vice-president. This is a new position at the univer- sity this semester. The person hired for this post is Professor John Crossley. Crossley is a Political Studies professor. He got his Bachelor at Brock University, and his Masters and Doctorate from the University of Toronto. As far as administrative experience, Crossley has been chair of the Political Studies and Canadian Studies departments, organized the Learned Conference, and was acting Dean of Arts last year. Crossley says it is ‘‘really exciting’’ being the first vice-presi- dent at UPEI. He thinks that being new to, and creating the position of VP is challenging. He has the opportunity to become an integral part of the restructuring processes at UPEI. Crossley, as vice-president, has many duties. His principle function is to implement the Strate- gic Plan. Some components are in practice now. There are ten areas under this plan and he has to help monitor and facilitate change. In order to fill this role, Crossley has to sit on various committees that are all relevant to the Strategic Plan. Asa result of his facilitator role, Crossley finds himself talking to a number of different people. He also has to make the academic plan and restruc- turing fit budgetary constraints. Crossley laughs ‘‘What do I do? I sit around and do everything or nothing, I am not too sure yet’’. As far as goals, Crossley has several. In the short term, he wants to get the campus talking about change and the process of change. Sylvie Desormeaux Student on the SUB copaittee. this goal. Faculty and staff were involved in the Plan and task forces, and Crossley wants to see this inter- action continue. Communication is the key to achieving this goal, specifically dealing with what people want. The long term goals depend on the university’s sense of what it wants to be, a sense that Crossley admits is emerging. Crossley sees this sense including ‘‘new things in the area of education, research, new ways of connecting with the com- munity at large and new ways of making students part of the univer- sity.’” The long run depends on the university itself. Crossley is con- vinced that ‘‘if you take some of the common measures, this university should be well into the top ten of the Maclean’s rankings, even though that is not the target’’. Crossley believes that there are plenty of good ideas around campus, and there is opportunities for UPEI to be recognized as an innovative institu- tion, still being a ‘‘small and com- fortable place rooted in the Island’’. Crossley wants people to know that he does work hard. In addition to his vice-presidential duties, he also teaches and does research. He wants people to give him their ideas. He is available for all students, faculty and staff to come to him and he can help get the ideas to the people who can do something with them. The VP’s office is located in the President’s office in Kelley, so feel free to go and talk to Crossley, as he is more than eager to listen to any sugges- tions, ideas, or concerns. 1 JR CAPO IES ,__ very low prices, very large portions.
