Have pity for the folk who know N0 home. and have no place to go. -—-Ylil Yap the Prairie Dog. Folks who have lest their homes and friends and have been made to wander out into the Crest World away from all they had held dear. "(It KIIOWUIK Where to go or what to do, are called displaced persons. m9"? 15 "Di-hing quite so sad as b91118 a displaced person. Ever since the last World War there have been ever and ever so many displaced persons. YEP Yap and Mrs. Yap Yap were displaced persons. They had had one of the finest homes in Yap- ville. the Prairie Dog town. They had been driven from it by fear and now they didn't know where to go, which way to turn. Black- foot the Ferret, own comm to Shadow the Weasel, had come to Yapville. Nobody knew where he had come from. That didn't matter. The thmz that did matter was that he was there. and no one is more feared by the Prairie Dog folk than Blackfoot the Ferret, You see he is very fond of Prairie Dog dinners. and he is so slim he can do what others equally fond of such dinners cannot do--go right down in the Prairie Dog home; age,- them. so those homes were no r Contract Bridge By Josephine Culbertson Jilin-naming - - - E FATAL FINESSE The finesse taken by today's declarer was quite unnecessary - and very expensive! South ruffed, cash- ed the trump ace (to guard against the possibility that West mighgi. hold the singleton queen), then led his low club to dummy and took a trump finesse. West won and forced declarer again with a spade. New South was in grave difficulty. I-le could, of course, draw the one trump still outstanding, but after that he had to knock out the diamond ace, and West's spade return gave the defenders the setting trick, since declarer had no trump left with which to ruff. In fact. South had to throw away a perfectly good dia- mond trick! This was one of those deals in which a finesse was nothing but a luxury-and, as it turned out. o. very costly one! Muth did not have to run the trump suit without loss-the only thing he needed was to find a 3-2 trump division, which is an ‘excellent chance when five trumps are outstanding. After rufflng the second spade lead, South should have cashed the ace and king of trumps. then. leaving the queen at large, gone about the vital business of getting out the diamond ace. Now the defenders could cash the heart queen, if they liked. and force declarer again in spade. but South would be in a position to claim his contract. The time-unit lost on the trump finesse. rather than the trick it- self (which hsd to be conceded in any event. as it happened) was what defeated the contract. uur- LIT m: dam bswrr-wwa wrcusa ' cu 1o scan-um!’ W. Burgess) longer what they had been all a- long, safe places for their owners. The Yap Yaps hadn't wanted to leave their homes. My goodnus. no! Of course not! But they had done it. They had waited only long enough for a chance to steal away without being noticed. They had made sure that no Coyote and no Fox was around; that no Eagle or l-lawk was ailing high in the sky. Then when Yap Yap. pecpln‘: from his doorway, had seen Black- foot go into another house they had slipped away from the village and run as fast as their legs could take them, all the time trying to keep where the weeds and grasses were highest. So it was that they got away without being seen by any one but Sandy the Burrowing Owl, and he wasn't interested. Now their legs are noiilong, and short legs tire sooner than long legs. So it wasn't long before they just had to stop and rest. Close together they had squatted among some tall weeds. "Do you think he will follow us?" panted Mrs. Yap Yap. Of course she meant Blackfoot the Ferret. “No.” replied Yap Yap. He was panting too. "He didnt see us leave. He wouldn't have followed us anyway. It would be much eas- ier, much less trouble, to go down in a house and catch some one else. I'm not afraid of him any more. He'll stay right there in the village as long as he can find a dinner there without too much trouble. We've always had to watch for Eagles and Hawks and Coyotes and Foxes ahd Badgers, but we've always had a safe place to run to. Now we haven't. 5o we simply musn't be seen. And there l3 no one to help watch, to warn us if they see danger we don't. S0 \ve will have tOlbfi extra watch- ful and careful. We won't have a chance if one of those sees us." “I'm afraid," whimpered Mrs. Yap Yap. “That's good. So am I," replied Yap Yap. "What is good about it?" snap- ped Mrs. Yap Yap crossly. ' "We'll keep better watch than if we were not afraid," said Yap Yap. There was a lot of wisdom in that small head of his. "Now let's be moving," he added. “Where to?" asked Mrs. Yap Yap. "How should I know?" retorted Yap Yap a wee bit sharply. "We'll just go somewhere, anywhere, and stop when we get there," he add- ed, which wasn't very clear to Mrs. Yap Yap or to himself. But to displaced persons where they are going and what they will do when they get there is seldom any clearer than that. So they ran on, sometimes one way, sometimes another way, but always away from Yapvllle and the friends they had known all their lives. They never ran far in any one direction. You sce they ran from clump to clump and patch to patch of the tallest plants because these hid them best. And the clumps seldom grew in a straight line. In a little while they were completely lost. Most displaced persons are.
