Smith in Market Hall Tuesday evening was listened to, and thoroughlyf enjoyed by a large and intelligent aud- ience. Mr. Richard Hunt presided and with one of his happiest speeches in‘roduoed the lecturer. Mr. Smith is a very pleasing speaker. and throughout the_hour‘s discourse held the attenticn ol his hearers. After referring to the importance of the subject the lecturer gave a definition of Evolution. the his- tory cf the _idea before Darwin,--the prominence given to the thought by the publication of Darwin's --Origin of Species.” He then gave an exposition of Darwin’s theory, conti iing _his attention to Biological Evolution. The evidence in favor of Biological Evolution from Embryology, Morphology, and “The scaffolding left in the Body” was stated and the criticism of the theory proceeded with, from the sfai dpoint of metaphysics, science, ethics, and reli- gion. Viewed in relation to these de- mands, biological evolution was re- garded as an inadequaie account ot man. Evolution as a Divine Method of opera- tion was then . considered and viewed as a more satisfactory his- tory of man. The re ation of this view io the interpretation of Scripture was unfolded. The purpose of Scripture, necessarily implying i's limitation to the spiritual lite, was presented some- what in detail, and what was regarded as the best interpretation of the opei ing chapters of Genesis was given. Even with ihe present imperfect conclusions of both science and theology he declared there is ample ground for believing that both departments of thought are rapidly converging and that any apparent con- dict will diéappear in the fuller light. A vote of thanks was _movrd in very complimentary terms by Stipendiary Magistrate McQuarrie, and seconded by Rev. E. J. Grant. '_ s. s. -Lesson. ` APRIL l6.-- Jssus TEACHING Hulnhrrr.
