The sport of fencing evolved from the swordplay of French noble- men. The French terminology which is still used today, is a legacy from the days when a duel could mean life or death. 1 Fencing ' 'Today three different wea-t pons are used in fencing: foil, epee and sabre. Both men and women fence, al- though women' are usually restricted to foil. Fencing is a unique sport, requiring both intellectual and physical prowess. The fencer has to be able to react to his opponent’s movements plot strategies, and execute plans with speed and agility, all within a matter of seconds. It is a sport iii which the individual must rely 'solely on his own skills tovdefeat his opponent. _If all this sounds intri- guing, don’t despair, there is. fencing at U.P.E.I. Two kinds of memberships-v are available: competitive and recreational.
